These views show how miners chipped out a small ledge on a granite cliff hundreds of feet below Spaulding Lake dam to create an anchor point for a powerhouse that seems embedded in the rock itself. They also celebrate the genius of mining-camp tinkerer Lester Pelton, who, in 1880, invented a more efficient waterwheel capable of spinning a generator shaft at high speed. His invention bore his name, and the basic design is used to this day throughout the world.

Yes. A very enjoyable evening. Wish they had spent a little more time on the Owens Valley (southern) end of the Sierra Nevada mountains as the book covers almost exclusively the northern end of the mountain range but a very interesting history.

Just what I wanted for Christmas. Great price too. Perfect condition.

I work on these same facilities now so the book really scratched my itch. So neat to see the contrast of old and new. Amazing we still use the same technology as a we did a hundred years ago.

Interesting old pictures but very little information on the dams and powerhouses. Many were not discussed at all. No overview or summary of the entire Sierra Nevada hydroelectric system.
