His Gettysburg: A journey in Time is a landmark photo-historical record of that epic battle. His analysis of the main photographers of the Gettysburg battle, and his examination of their quirks and techniques sheds valuable new light on the battlefield.

Gettysburg: A Journey in Time. by. William A. Frassanito. A unique example of photographic detective work in which the famous battle is re-created almost as if it were a contemporary news event. The reader is transported to the battlefield by the photographs and through the analysis of the photographs to the battle itself. We watch it unfold, action by action.

I feel that Mr. Frassanito's work has been the catalyst in America's renewed interest in the Civil War. Ken Burns wouldn't have gotten anywhere without the groundwork laid by William Frassanito, beginning with this book. I highly recommend any of Mr. Frassanito's works. Tom Hahner Munhall, PA. 0.

In this, his first book, Frassanito pioneers the study of Civil War photography and the use of photos as historical documents

In this, his first book, Frassanito pioneers the study of Civil War photography and the use of photos as historical documents. He shows us that each photo is loaded with information the same as any written record. Filled with scenes of the Gettysburg battlefield taken immediately after the battle, each photo is analyzed and accompanied by a modern view. Overall in very good, clean condition. Minor age yellowing to dustjacket and pages. A few minor tears to edges of dustjacket.

This hardback book "Gettysburg" is preowned but looks very good. It is 1975. This book has no dust cover. On the edge the letters of Gettysburg are fading at the top. On the inside of the back cover by the spine is some damage. It looks like moisture damage. It looks like it has affected maybe 10 pages. Then the back cover at the top has a small place that has damage as shown in the picture.

Gettysburg in historically analyzed photographs
5+ stars. William Frassanito has done an outstanding job in Gettysburg historical photograph research and interpretation. His Gettysburg: A journey in Time is a landmark photo-historical record of that epic battle. He breaks new ground in documentation and research of old civil war era photographs. His analysis of the main photographers of the Gettysburg battle, and his examination of their quirks and techniques sheds valuable new light on the battlefield. His fastidious "then and now" comparison of the actual ground in the photographs is an invaluable aid to those who want to walk that hallowed ground today. Since Mr. Frassanito's publication of Gettysburg: A Journey in Time, the park service has done yeoman's work to return the battlefield to the way it ways on those 3 hot days of July, 1863.
An absolute must have for Civil War buffs. Excellent book for anyone interested in Gettysburg. It will help clarify the battlefield an aid in understanding just how the battlefield looked during the battle. Thank you Mr. Frassanito for an outstanding work of Gettysburg historical analysis.

This is really well done for anyone interested in civil war photography. The author has researched where, when, why, and who took the original photo. Most include a modern view of the same vantage point. Very interesting read.

If you really want to understand Gettysburg on cellular level, you look at these photos. You even look at them with a magnifying glass so as not to miss the details. You take in the visuals, and you let them frame the words you read and you will understand. You will know.

I bought this copy to replace one I gave to a dear friend years a go. I came back to the subject with a renewed respect for Frassanito's research. His story of discovery of the living nature of civil war era photos, from age 9 to publishing this book in the 70's explains the title of the book. The photos and the text of the book will put you back in Gettysburg in 1863 better than anything else I've read since Glenn Tucker's High Tide at Gettyburg.

Excellant study of the battle photos, allowing me to go right to the spot they were originally taken when visiting Gettysburg this past summer. A must have if you are planning to go.

I found this informative reference for famous Civil War Battle-this tells how these pictures were taken-who took them and when they were taken. Frassanito has also written other books including photos taken at Antietam and Lee/Grant Va Campaings of 1864-1865. A good supplement to the Francis miller's 1911 Photographic History of the Civil War
Great for Civil War buffs.
