War Without Battles is the first history of a NATO Cold War formation .
War Without Battles is the first history of a NATO Cold War formation and uses the Canadian Army’s contribution to NATO’s Central Region in West Germany as a lens from which to view NATO strategy and operational doctrine critical to deterring the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact forces. This history covers the whole period, from the dangerous days of 1951 right up to the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Germany in 1993. Nuclear planning aspects predominate in the first half of the book, while the NATO re-armament programme of the 1980s is the focus of the second half.

Canada’s Most Distinguished Military Leaders from Tecumseh to Dextraze. This book is very similar in content and format to Allen Andrews Brave Soldiers, Proud Regiments: Canada’s Military Heritage; indeed both treat some of the same figures.
Chiefs of Defence: Government and the Unified Command of the Canadian Armed Forces. Canada’s Most Distinguished Military Leaders from Tecumseh to Dextraze. From reading early galleys of the two, Bishop’s is likely to be both better written and more accurate. The air force version of the Bishop and Andrews volumes is David Bashow’s All the Fine Young Eagles, a history of Canadian Second World War fighter pilots.
