Though the location had never been entirely verified, in Images of America: Idlewild, author Jeffrey S. Croushore acknowledges the opinion that the event took place in a section of Idlewild that was previously a wooded area known as the Woodlands. Built in 1947, Idlewild's model was one of three similar rides still in operation in North America, one of two featuring a working canopy that covers the riders, and the only one that still utilized an undercarriage fan. The ride was removed to be refurbished and returned in the future.

Its tranquil setting quickly established Idlewild as the premier place for church, school, and corporate picnics, as well as a recreational getaway for families. Idlewild added new amusements and facilities as its crowds continued to grow, but it always strove to maintain the picturesque landscape of the site. Soon a full-fledged amusement park was in operation, with throngs of visitors disembarking the trains from such places as Latrobe, Greensburg, and Pittsburgh.

Home to unique attractions like Story Book Forest, the Rollo Coaster, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood of Make-Believe, and the SoakZone, Idlewild has been the backdrop for generations of fond memories. Idlewild's proximity to the Lincoln Highway helped the park survive the abandonment of the railroad, and careful development by the Mellon and Macdonald families and the Kennywood Entertainment Company continue to help it thrive. This collection of photographs tells the story of how one of America's most beautiful theme parks has grown throughout the years.

Oh, the special memories the photos brought back. I could almost smell the "woods", the river and feel the cool breezes. I could hear the bagpipes from the Scottish picnics. I was a kid again if only for a few minutes.

I grew up going to Idlewild Park every summer for the Irwin/Norwin Community Picnic. Reading about the history of the park and the changes brought back many childhood memories. I now go back just to re-live those memories. If you want to read about a classic family amusement park, this is the book for you.

Wonderful book! The book is very interesting. It goes back into the history of Idlewild. Back to the beginning, which is very intersting. I however really enjoy the history that I remember. Reading the book has me going back into my old photos and finding pictures of me on the rides pictured in the book.

I have flipped through the book with my husband and we both exclaim, " I remember that!" "I loved that ride!" "I forgot all about that!"

I plan on purchasing this book for gifts. It is a wonderful trip down memory lane.
