I AM FROM KY AND SOME OF MY FAMILY WENT TO ONE ROOM SCHOOL HOUSES - MY GRANDMOTHER SAID SHE TAUGHT - SHE MUST HAVE BEEN VERY SMART BECAUSE SHE DID NOT GO TO COLLEGE - SHE LIVED IN A VILLAGE OFF THE MAIN ROAD AND FAR FROM A LARGER CITY. WAS SURPRISED THAT THERE WERE STILL MANY ONE ROOM SCHOOL HOUSES IN THE 1960S. I GREW UP IN CENTRAL KY WHICH WAS MUCH DIFFERENT THAN EASTERN KENTUCKY. I SENT THE BOOK TO MY COUSIN - HE AND HIS WIFE JUST RETIRED FROM TEACHING IN ANOTHER STATE.

As one who never attended a one-room school, but went to a five-room school to which were consolidated three smaller schools in 1958, this book rang the old school bell. We swelled from 24 first graders to 36 third graders. Most of my teachers were veterans of one-room schools and several of those relating memories were teachers from my home county. These dedicated souls charmingly tell it like it was, and it is certainly a history of change in the twentieth century, imminently readable--poignant, fun, and a frank pleasure on every page.

I bought my copy of "Tales From Kentucky One-Room School Teachers" at a local festival. The title caught my eye since I am an elementary school teacher in Ky. I love reading about teachers and students from years ago. It keeps me grounded when I start to grumble about teaching requirements now. Challenges are always there...past and present, but it is all about your attitude. I really like this book!

This was a gift for a family member who grew up in Kentucky and attended a one room school. He thoroughly enjoyed the book. Lots of short stories from all over the state, index in back helps you locate stories from specific areas.
