Unquestionably, the invasion of Britain by the Romans in 43 AD was a moment of major historical significance that shaped the destiny of the country. Roman technology, architecture, and society would inevitably help to form the UK’s own society in the centuries to follow. But what of the time before the Romans arrived? Archaeologists tell us that the British Isles were settled by different groups of humans for hundreds of thousands of years prior to any Roman getting this far north. In fact, you’ll find that the prehistoric groups that lived here had a vibrant history and society of their own.

The Romans came to Britain not to settle down there, and they did not return to Britain. The Celts were left alone absolutely leadless and defenseless. Before the Romans there had been no towns in Britain. The Romans were the first to build towns. In the Roman towns there were market places where merchants sold their goods.

Caesar wrote, "The Britons have a huge number of cattle, they use gold coins or iron bars as their money, and produce tin and iron.

William Henry Webb (19 June 1816 – 30 October 1899) was a 19th-century New York shipbuilder and philanthropist, who has been called America's first true naval architect. Webb inherited his father's shipyard, Webb & Allen, in 1840, renamed it William H. Webb, and turned it into America's most prolific shipyard, building 133 vessels between 1840 and 1865.

Traditionally, British history has been regarded as starting with the Roman Conquest. Yet this is to ignore half a million years of prehistory that still exert a profound influence on British and Irish life today.
