Robin Birley was formerly the Director of Excavations at the Roman site of Vindolanda . I just received the book about Vindolanda. It is about life in a Fort near Hadrian's Wall during the Roman period.

Prior to the building of Hadrian's Wall, Roman builders constructed buildings with barracks, offices, storerooms, baths, offices, private quarters, outbuildings and roads comparable to anything in today's world with primitive tools. Writing tablets fill in much of everyday administrative duties as well as personal lives, while digs unearth some facinating personal objects.

The bronze hand, which had been deposited in a ritually significant boggy area of land adjacent to a Roman fort at Vindolanda on Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland shortly after the end of the conflict, was associated with a Roman god of Middle Eastern origin called Jupiter Dolichenus (originally a local Syrian version of the Roman king of the gods, Jupiter). The regiment based there was a Gaulish (French) originating unit of auxiliary infantry and cavalry – known as the fourth cohort of Gauls.
