FRIGATES IN THE FRENCH NAVY 1650 - 1850 AN HISTORICAL STUDY OF THE FRIGATE IN THE FRENCH NAVY This book is devoted to the history of a ship whose very name evokes deep historical resonances, the frigate. The reader follows the evolution of frigates in the French navy from their origin in the 1660s to the mid-19th century when the sailing wood military navy reached an end. The evolution of frigates may be divided into two phases. The first phase is characterized by the use of small two-decker vessels and of modest ships called light frigates

Along with a concluding chapter arranged topically, various frigate types are discussed chronologically, ranging from the early 8-pounders through the 12-pounders of the American Revolutionary War period, to the famous 18-pounders of the Napoleonic era and the 24- and 30- pounders of the Restoration.

Frigates in the french navy 1650 - 1850 an historical study of the frigate in the french navy. Jean Boudriot is uniquely qualified to tell that story. The French frigate has already been the subject of three monographs in the series, with La Renommée (8-pdr, 1744), La Belle-Paul: (l2-pdr, I765), and La Vénus (l 8-pdr, I782), but this book is entirely new: it follows the evolution of the sailing frigate in the French Navy from its earliest.

This book is devoted to the history of a ship whose very name evokes deep historical resonances, the frigate.

Long out of print, I've been looking for this one for a long, long time. I own several other books by Mr. Boudriot, including the monumental and magisterial The Seventy Four Gun Ship, and have found his quirky French style of authorship (complemented by his excellent scale and perspective drawings) to be very enjoyable.

This book was not quite up to the standards of that extreme benchmark, but it's close. A review of the development of the frigate type in French service, it is well composed in a number of chapters, each covering one element of the long story. Period illustrations are used to illustrate specific points in the text, and the text itself is as insightful as in his other books, with all of it translated by his long time associate David Roberts.

Mr. Boudriot's illustration skills are exhibited here, almost always in the form of plan or elevation views of the ships in question. But, if you look closely, you'll see than his little Frenchmen are there, carrying a measuring rod or pulling on a line. They're smaller here than in The Seventy Four Gun ship, but they are present and accounted for, usually near the bottom margin of the drawings.

What IS missing in this book are the larger scale, perspective illustrations of the French artisans and mariners going about their daily tasks, fabricating and operating some of the most graceful sailing warships ever built. That omission (and the impossibility of obtaining a copy of this book at a reasonable price), are the only reasons that I've marked it down a single star.

In short, if you are a Boudriot fan (and I am), you will enjoy this book. If you are new to the topic and author, it's good (but not as good as The Seventy Four Gun Ship - hell, in that book you even get the list of cheeses routinely included in the officer's mess) and worth a look.

I just hope that Mr. Boudriot gets around to the ships of the line of the Napoleonic Era before I die.

Jean Boudriot's ship books are absolute gems, and particularly prized when available in English. This oversized volume, translated as usual by David Roberts, covers the entire development of the French frigate from 1650 to 1850. La Renommee (1744-1747), La Belle-Poule (1765-1780), and La Venus (1782) are called out for detailed examination, with full sets of plans reproduced (note, however, that these are smaller than the modelmaker's plans available separately in Boudriot's single-ship monographs). Many other plans, both original and reconstructed, are reproduced, along with a section of stunning photographs of ship models in the collection of La Musee de la Marine in Paris. As is usual in Boudriot's books, every aspect is first-rate (despite frigates being the subject). This volume contains virtually everything a sailing navy fan would want to know about the development, construction, fitting, decoration, arming, masting, rigging, and sailing of the French frigate. Any Royal Navy chauvinists out there should remember that the Brits greatly admired French design and frequently employed captured frigates. More importantly, Jean Boudriot's scholarship and draftsmanship is unsurpassed by any authority writing today. In the case of a Boudriot book, more and bigger is always better.

Yet another example of Boudriot's brilliant penchant for accuracy and exhaustive detail. I can only wish more of Jean Boudriot's work could be translated into English, as (like most Americans!) I am unable to speak or read French. What a loss to the English reading public! That said, the History of the French Frigate fills a major gap in the literature regarding French naval ship types, and should be a 'must read' for any serious scholar of Napoleonic and Revolutionary war naval history.
