Derek Robinson read history at Cambridge before working in advertising in London and New York. Goshawk Squadron was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1971. Robinson has written many books, but WAR STORY might be his best. The prose is crisp and arresting, managing to sum up complex characters in a few pages and sometimes in just a few sentences, and his experience as a pilot lend an authenticity to the flying sequences that's hard to match elsewhere. He "gets" pilots in the same way he "gets" the culture of the Royal Flying Corps.

Tony Robinson gives a stunning, bravado performance, at times hysterically funny, Baldrick-like and sometimes deeply moving, but always passionate, in this compelling tour around the city of Bristol - filmed with great affection, some twenty one years ago. Scenes include Sir Tony visiting the mysterious Redcliffe Caves, the ruins of the 18th century Hotwells Spa, the Clifton Rocks Railway, on board The SS Great Britain, at the top of the Cabot Tower, inside St Mary Redcliffe Church, the Bristol Slave Trade and the story of The Matthew.
