Administrative, Biographical History. Purchased from Christie's (auctioneers), 28 November 1990, with the aid of the V&A Purchase Grant Fund and the Friends of the National Libraries, from C. Gunner. Colin Gunner and Philip Larkin met at junior school and were good friends, along with James Ballard Sutton. After leaving school the two lost touch, and last met in the early 1940s. However, their correspondence was renewed in the early 1970s, when Gunner sought Larkin's advice on the publication of his wartime memoirs (later published as Adventures with the Irish Brigade). If this sounds familiar to US readers, it may be because Call the Fire Brigade is a quite similar in nature to Dennis . Grice's writing is wonderful. He puts you right there in the fire station and in the midst of the calls with the fire crews
If this sounds familiar to US readers, it may be because Call the Fire Brigade is a quite similar in nature to Dennis Smith's Report from Engine Co. 82. If you've read Smith's excellent book on his FDNY service at the busiest fire station in the United States, Grice's book and experiences are similar in the type of fires and neighborhoods encountered. He puts you right there in the fire station and in the midst of the calls with the fire crews. He really brings out the personalities of the firefighters he worked with, bringing the interactions between them alive and showing how the chemistry between them helped them get the job done and stay sane in the process.
His first book of poetry, The North Ship, was published in 1945, followed by two novels, Jill (1946) and A Girl in Winter (1947), and he came to prominence in 1955 with the publication of his second collection of poems, The Less Deceived, followed by The Whitsun Weddings (1964) and High Windows (1974).
