The Santa Fe Trail was a 19th-century transportation route through central North America that connected Franklin, Missouri with Santa Fe, New Mexico. Pioneered in 1821 by William Becknell, who departed from the Boonslick region along the Missouri River, the trail served as a vital commercial highway until the introduction of the railroad to Santa Fe in 1880. Santa Fe was near the end of the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, which carried trade from Mexico City.

For all the Santa Fe Trails enthusiasts out there, Colonel Henry Inman's classic tome is worth checking . This book consists of a series of interesting anecdotes loosely related to the Old Santa Fe Trail and a large area nearby.

Nevertheless, the Colonel can write and many of his stories captivate like a campfire tale. The overall effect is an enjoyable book, but one that falls somewhat short of providing a distinct image of the Trail itself.

The Santa Fe Trail was America’s first commercial highway. Bent’s Old Fort was rebuilt in the 1970s as a National Historic Site. Traders established the trail-which connected Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico and covered some 900 miles of the Great Plains-in 1821. Before its demise due to the completion of the Santa Fe railroad, the Santa Fe Trail served as a thoroughfare for countless traders, pioneers and America’s military, and it played a crucial role in America’s westward expansion. Before the Santa Fe Trail.
