Had a different cover than the one that was advertised but i think that may have been in the original year of issue. Book in good condition and was very happy with the promptness of the delivery.

A great reference for a serious modeler

Dana Bell has been proving his expertise as a world-class expert in U.S. WWII camouflage colors and patterns for may years. This older title still provides wonderful information for the enthusiast, historian and modeler.

Reads like an ancient military manual and the pictures are just so-so and not enough in color. Not worth the price.

One disappointing thing about this book on US Air Force colors is the lack of color photos - then you realize that back in the 20's and 30's, color photos were very rare. Having said that, a lot of the photos used in this book are very dark and hard to see what the caption is saying.

The 1930's-1940's saw some of the most unique and colorful of all US planes. There was no standardization, and even when rules came out trying to create standards, they were not always followed.

There are 16 color plates to help the modeler make sense of all of this. Unit and Squadron crests are also shown here. Perhaps the best help is on page 94 - the author tries to match US paint colors with the paint used by model paint companies. The captions are very helpful and the text tries to help the reader understand all of the different things that were going on that created such a wide variation from plane to plane, squadron to squadron.

This book is really geared for the modeler - I think it is helpful for any one who is trying to create an accurate paint scheme for these years. I'd buy it again and will be looking for volumes 2 and 3 as well.

This is an excellent reference for the model builder. It covers all the different color schemes used for the time span. It has a lot of color profiles, and shows bombers, fighters, transport, and training aircraft.
