Mother of Eagles' is an ambitious undertaking, but contains flaws. To clarify one point, Fischer is the book's translator, not author. Overall, Freifrau von Richthofen's perspectives on the war and her famous sons should interest many World War I aviation history enthusiasts-except for the aforementioned Richthofen critics.

Baroness Kunigunde von Richthofen originally published Mein Kriegstagebuch (My War Diary) in 1937, at a time when tales of heroes of the First World War inspired the youth of a country being prepared for a second war. Mother of Eagles is the culmination of the translation of the war diary, along with numerous facts and information not included in the original work. Follow the youth and wartime exploits of Manfred and Lothar, the leading German aces of World War I, through the eyes of their mother and a nation. Letters to the Barronness from each of her sons intially depict the wartime conditions on the ground, and then evolve into vivid details about the exhiliration of the hunt in the air for ever increasing numbers of enemy planes. This book will not only appeal to those interested in the Red Baron and his ace brother, Lothar, but to anyone who is interested in reading of the civilian life in Germany during the Great War.

Outstanding book. When you read about the day The Baroness learned of her son's death your heart will be sorrowful too.
This woman like many of her generation are very articulate and her words are the words of what many a Mother must have thought and felt after having lost a son during that horrible war, which should never have happened .
The Von Richtofen family were an outstanding family like many of the other European Family's at the time. There was an self imposed obligation to serve whether it was for ones country or in hospital Corps attending to the sick and wounded the the Richtofen women.
I added this book to my Red Baron library and I highly recommend it to anyone with any interest in the Red Baron OR if you want to get some insight into the suffering at the the German homefront during the war.
I highly recommend it.

An excellent read of Mother Richthofen’s diary right before and during WW1. Gives us a better understanding and humanizes her famous son Manfred as well as his brothers, sister and father. You also get a better understanding of the hardships at the German home front and the sacrifices all families made both rich and poor.
The editor also provides an excellent introduction and general history of the German home front as well. Recommend!

If you are a Red Baron fan, this book has insights into his writing style (as best as can be expected through translation) and his relationship with his family. It has interesting stories about the Baron's aircraft and his experiences in them. It also gives insight into the home front life of WWI Germany.

A wonderful and very moving read. Book is unusually heavy!

Adds some great background information - especially the funk Richthofen went into after his head wound.

This was one of the best books on the personal character of Manfred Von Richthofen and his family. The book was very interesting and had great photos. The book shows the personal correspondences between the family during WW1 and documented other interesting facts during that time.
Best book I've read so far concerning the
Richthofen brothers
