I have to admit I am a little biased about this book.

Way back in the 1990's I met Bruce Pascal in my driveway. He lived down the street from me. I was polishing my Jaguar XKE and he pulled up in a be-finned 50's car. A car guy all the way!

I had been writing for Toy Trader and later a couple of publications by the Old Cars publisher in Wisconsin. Bruce had stopped by to ask my advice about Hot Wheels. He asked me what I thought about his plan to buy an old Hot Wheel car "for about '60'". Well there are lots of Hot Wheels out there that are worth about $60 so I said it sounded reasonable - depending of course on what car he was talking about. Some are as common as dirt and not worth much more than a dollar.

Sensing that I didn't really comprehend what he was talking about, he gave me some more info - he was talking about a pink, rear-loading Beach Bomb... Wait - there's no such thing, Bruce! Well, in actuality there is. Bruce had found one, and had been able to confirm that it was a real Hot Wheels from the factory, by way of a Mattel employee that traveled to Hong Kong on business and had managed to get it.

It turns out that when Bruce said "60" he was talking about $60,000. I was stunned. The most a Beach Bomb had recently sold for was about $4000.00 So the huge gap blew my mind. And as it turned out, Bruce paid a lot more than "60" for the Pink, Rear Loading Beach Bomb.

So when Bruce took delivery of the Pink, he invited me over to photograph the transaction and later came by to ask me to photograph it for him. I wrote a story for Mobilia (a now defunct magazine). Over the years I have supplied him with pictures of the Pink, for various purposes. During that time Bruce became one of the most detail-oriented collectors. He researched Hot Wheels like nobody I have ever known. He tracked down an incredible collection of rare, prototype, and one-of-a-kind Hot Wheels.

Fast forward to last fall. Bruce called me on the phone and asked if I had some time to photograph his collection for a book. Are you kidding me? I was happy to drop by and shoot his collection! And what a collection it is. I saw things I didn't even know existed. It was like being a kid in a candy store!

At the end of a very long day I had photographed pretty much everything that Bruce wanted for the book. I spent the next three days post-processing the images to get them in shape for this very special book. Later, Bruce's publisher called me to ask if I could help them with the cover. Hey! Why not! So I brought out the first image of the Pink Rear Loading Beach Bomb, combined it with some rare blue-prints of original car designs from Mattel (provided by Bruce) and together with the ideas from the publisher, we had a cover!

From beginning to end this project was a joy to produce. The research and discussion that Bruce, Michael, and Curtis put into this book will blow your mind! If you think you know Hot Wheels, check yourself. This book covers some new ground. Dare I say the photos are awesome, and the cars are out of this world!

As a photographer, one always has a concern that the images will be reproduced well. No matter how good the photos are, a bad printing can spoil them. I have received my copy of the book (Thanks Bruce!) and am overjoyed at the print quality. The images are every bit as good as the originals I provided. The printer of this book did a great job!

Nice Job Guys!

Being a long time Hot Wheels collector of only the original 5 years of production, I found this book to be very informative with lots of great information contained within that even a collector like myself learned a lot from. Highly recommend to any passionate Hot Wheels or diecast collector!
