I just received this book early this week and I'm already planning a project from it. This is a lovely little self published book that explains the entire process of making a knitted brimmed hat. This book is not just soft hat patterns, it is how to make a proper blocked brimmed hat, with a measured (non stretch) crown size.

The text in this book is excellent covering the entire how-to process of how to wire and block the hat, where to get the millinery supplies, including how to make your own hat block. You will learn how to block the hat and wire the crown and brim to give the hat form.

The illustrations are well done, but the one disappointment of the book is that due to the limitations of the self printing, the photographs are not optimal. Some of the lace charts also suffer just a bit in printing but not to the point of being impossible to use. That is the one point that made me drop my rating.

It would be wonderful to see this book have a chance to be updated and reprinted by the same firm that did her other lovely book Romantic Handknits with the full color pages. As a note, Romantic Handknits does contain two lovely hats within it's pages that are similar to the ones in this book, as well as much of the information used in their construction, so if you're not looking to make several hats you might look at that book as well.

If you're looking to knit several different hats and have a wide selection of styles I would definately reccommend this book, if you are looking to try just one hat I would recommend her other book with it's two lovely patterns, and it's additional tops, skirts and accessories.

If you have visual challenges I definately recommend the two hat patterns in Romantic Handknits as easier to read.

Annie is a hoot. This is a wonderful addition to my knitting library.

I was very disapointed with this book. The hats are poorly photographed and the book looks like it was printed on the home computer and then spiral bound. The binding is great though. The images are unclear, images are important in any book that is demonstrating a skill for DIY enthusiasts. If I had seen this book in a physical book shop I would have left it behind, as it is my copy has been passed on.

As for the hats themselves and the techniques advised: I guess I expected to get a bit more diversity amongst the five hats, but they're all pretty much of a sameness.

I imagine this book would be good for someone who likes a classic style hat as opposed to the variety of characters found in many other good knitting books. The lace knitting charts are clear as are the instructions for constructing the hat and the various techniques utilised, you just need to be good at following written instructions.

Skill level needed: Medium and above- may be a bit daunting for beginners.

There are few books for making knitted hats. And I think I am lucky that I found one of those. I want to try to make one of these for this summer. These kind of lace hats are expensive. The instructions seem to be complete; for the lace there are charts and written instructions.
