What is Woof? Whimsical enough for children and urbane enough for adults, this remarkable gift book is a wondrous feat of paper engineering. Its pages are composed of piece of multicolored paper that are die-cut and woven by hand.

Madalyn Eastus - Woof. More to the point, Woof is a book of weaving: it's twenty-six spiral-bound pages of pure colors and precision cuts. Nope, there's not a single word about man's best friend and furry, four-footed companions; even though the title is an onomatopoetic bark. You might want to pull out that Funk and Wagnalls of your and look up the word "woof" - and if you did, you might learn something new. You see, "woof" and "warp" are the names of the two different thread orientations in weaving. So, this isn't a book about dogs, it's a book about weaving

Madalyn Davis, 21, was fatally injured at Diamond Bay, Sydney, on Sunday. Emergency crews were alerted by a group of people who could not find her after taking photos there. Signs warn tourists to stay away from the cliff edge and the local mayor said the height of fences in the area had been increased. Madalyn joined the academy in the latter stages of her secondary education, had a keen interest in and an obvious talent for art and design, and had done well in her GCSEs. Our deepest condolences go out to Madalyn's family and friends at this very difficult time.

Klinger Friedrich Maximilian. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER V. The h.rrible death of the Pope, and the frightful figure of the Devil, whom Faustus had hitherto only seen majestic and comely, made so strong an impression upon him, that he hastened from the villa to Rome; and, having packed up his things, instantly departed, with perturbed mind and beating heart.

This week’s Artists’ Book Shelf includes Madalyn Eastus’s Woof, in which she represents weaving patterns from numerous craft traditions by cutting and folding paper. Her brilliantly engineered designs consist of multiple layers held together without adhesives. New York: Abrams, 1998.

The depth and texture of this book is astonishing. Essentially, it is a book of paper weavings, but that's like calling a Japanese Zen garden, "a bunch of plants." I could spend half an hour just examining the relationships between the patterns between one side of a page and the other.

When you start looking at the way colors and patterns show through form one page to the next (and the next, and sometimes the next), and then start looking at the progressions, it's just mind-boggling.

I wander through this book a few pages at a time, and it's a unique experience.

A tiny work of art and the bookbinder's craft. Simple, precious, creative, charming. A fairy would have this on her bookshelf.
