Ended up with two copies of this (my bad) but it's worth it IMHO. I used it to school myself on timber frame joinery that I used to turn a pickup truck full of old barn beams into a 10 x 16' shed for my lawn tractor and assorted equipment. Had some experience from assisting our master carpenter in building our post and beam (all mortise and tenon) cape 30 yrs ago. But this book is very easy to understand and use as a guide for layout and actual cutting of joints. I even used hand-hewn beams after I screwed up a couple of the barn beams. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the craft

Let us just say you have nothing for timber framing. You like the idea this would be the wikipedia version, nothing esoteric, just is. The book is just a reference and confidence booster probably reading this book is equivalent to a three hour lesson, and it might make you confident enough to actually acquire tools and go into the bush. This book encouraged that.

I'm building a 8x10 shed using timber framing joinery. This is my first attempt at timber framing. The book offered a good overview and very good information on the types of joints and why you would want to use a particular one. What I found most helpful was the section of the book where he documented step by step the building of a 12x16 shed. Real life examples really helped.

This book covers, the history, and how to of timber framing. It has a step by step guide on how to build a 12' x 16' timber frame structure. Covering everything from timber selection, felling, drying, cutting joints, to raising bents. I have had only minimal exposure to timber framing and found this to be an amazing resource to get a better grasp on the general concepts.

Great trove of knowledge. In my mind illustrations are key, and I wish they had gotten newer and better ones/more for this book. Having said that I understand that this is an old art that isn't practiced nearly as much these days

Black and white photos are harder to get a good visual grasp on. But the explanation of technical items and techniques are very good. It explains the types of joints used in timber framing and shows you how to use them in the proper way.

My retirement acreage is 1/2 way up a mountain in a county without building codes. This book has the detailed drawings and instructions of the joints. It also explains the assembly and raising of the structures.
A good read!
