This book is about fixing up old boats made of wood. For many people, a boat isn't a boat unless it's made of wood. The psychological and philosophical reasons for needing to own a boat made from honest trees instead of the material that L. Francis Herreshoff characterized as "frozen snot" needn't concern us. But in this day and age, hard-nosed economics and the ubiquitous bottom line certainly should.

FACT: You can buy a repairable wooden boat and renovate and remodel it for a lot less money than you can buy and renovate a plastic or metal of similar size and condition.

It will supply you with the basic skills you'll need to successfully renovate an old wooden boat--any old wooden boat, from a 16-foot canoe to a 50-foot cruiser, and everything in between--provided the boat actually is repairable (and you'll learn how to determine that, too). This is a very nice overview for regular (not super wealthy) boating enthusiasts, DIYers, closet carpenters, dreamers, builders and planners such as myself.

As other reviews suggest, this is a mind-set book clearly leaning toward getting your renovated boat back in the water instead of laboring over a "restoration project" for years and years.

And, as other reviewers point out, this is not the be-all end-all book, but rather an overview. For further reading, the author himself has a large list of more specialized books you might want to read as well.

I loved it. Part common sense, part imparted procedures and skills, and generally a nice easy read on the subject, punctuated with humor.

I found the book to cover mostly the planking and basic framing replacement. My only wish is that the author gave more information on assessing a boats condition for restoration instead of recommending an expert to do it for you. All in all boat restoration is for no woodworking amateur.
