A professional turner, Stott offers a collection of 50 wooden boxes that are remarkable both for their beauty and for their diverse design. After the obligatory tool and wood sections (which are excellent), Stott presents ideas for designing and marketing boxes and shows several methods of finishing them. The boxes range from plain (appropriately called the "simple box") to fancy (one example is evocative of the Space Needle in Seattle).

Fifty projects, showcasing an incredible richness of shapes and styles, will appeal to turners who have mastered the basics and long to expand their range of techniques. Among the highlights: graceful teardrop, Japanese lantern, skep or beehive, onion-top, and Mosque boxes. Bonus: a gallery of works by leading turners.

This is a fantastic book for anyone that likes to turn boxes. It assumes you have some turning experience (although just the basic skills are needed) so if you’re a beginner it WON’T explain how to hollow or make the proper cuts with your tools. There are plenty of YT videos that do and I recommend taking a class or learning from an experienced turner as well. What the book DOES do if give an intro then shows 50 boxes with some tips on making them, along with photos of the box and drawings that you can set your dividers/calipers to to make a replication. There are some beautiful designs here, ranging from basic, simple, and easy boxes to more elegant and complex offerings that will test your skills, like footed and squared top boxes. There’s something here for everyone, and will allow the newbie to further advance their skills while making some impressive boxes as well as giving those with experience more challenging designs. There are also variations on some of the boxes which allows the turner to make more than just the 50 advertised on the cover. If you like or want to start turning boxes and know basic tool use, this is a must have resource with enough designs to keep you making boxes for years without ever repeating the same design. Pictured is a slight variation of the Chinese Hat box made from mesquite, the first I made from this book.

Enough retoric and history to explain his passion for boxes, then he goes into an inventory of 50 boxes and how to turn each. He does not repeat himself once he has explained a process (Thank goodness) but rather builds to more sophisticated projects with the understanding that you have already seen the simpler stuff explained earlier in the book.
Lots of good ideas I don't think anyone could get bored with.

This book is a great resource for someone who already has made many boxes. The pictures are great and their boxes are amazing. However being new to turning boxes, I was hopping for some insight as to how the boxes were made. There's no information as to how these boxes were made. I will still read and re-read and wish I could be that good and maybe someday with enough practice???

Just finished watching this author strut is stuff at the local woodcraft store. He was there giving a nice demo for the local wood turning group(s) in Colorado.

I was able to look over a few of the items that the photo's take of. very good work - clean - good design - good feel in the hands.

A very nice person to deal with - clean examples of his fine work. I quickly paged thru the book - and will give you ideas for your own turnings.

You never have to make the same box twice - unless you want to prove ya can.

Great book to have in any woodturner's library of resources. Been turning for over 30 years and I found the book a must have for a resource collection.
A classic from a classic British turner.
Thanks, Chris
