This book definitely has a bias and reads more romantically than informatively. I also hate books that really do try to scare you away from owning a dog like if you don't have a doctorate in alaskan malamutes don't even bother. Tell people the pros and cons of a breed but giving your two cents opinion in a book that should be informative kills it for me. There was some good advice and there were facts, but I bet there are better books out there.

This book (as thin as it may be) contains plenty of information about Alaskan Malamutes. I actually changed my mind about buying one halfway through because I learned how intelligent and independent they are and why - this book will explain; but they are not there for your every wish and whim and are fairly difficult to train (I'm not experienced at ALL I just admired their beauty!) If you're considering one, you should TOTALLy read this~

Love this book. Definitely recommended for first time Alaskan Malamute owners, or just someone wanting more in-depth discussion pertaining to the breed.

I am generally not very happy with these "breed books", however I was very impressed with this book. The information about Malamutes is very helpful. It gives a very good overview of the breed, and is fair in presenting the challenges, not just a romaticized sales pitch. I also was very pleased with the emphasis on positive training methods. Overall, for an introduction to a breed book, I felt this is one of the best I've seen, and would recommend it for anyone who is considering getting a Malamute. It is a very good overview of the breed and what to think about and plan and prepare for---and will be a good reference as you start out. It is not an indepth book on all subjects, but a very good intro.

I enjoyed the first three chapters of _Alaskan Malamutes_, which included a brief history of the breed, a sketch of who should own a malamute, and tips on house breaking. The book is accessible to the novice dog owner, and includes both general information on dog ownership and specific information for malamutes.

I was expecting a book that was more scientific. This book fell short by offering mostly a mix of anecdotes and common advice, rather than facts and careful reasoning. The chapter, “Feeding a Very Large Dog”, advises, “You are better off leaving the chemistry to the experts and reaping the benefits of their research by feeding your dob a high-quality commercial diet that fits the “complete and balanced” criteria.” This tastes of argumentum ad veracudiam. The book never explains exactly what “complete and balanced” means for malamute nutrition. Similarly, the book advises that you often get what you pay for in commercial dog food regarding protein quality, but never explains what it means for protein to be “high quality”.

The section on health issues is much less useful than a quick internet search. The main line of advice is to see your vet. These sections use stock malamute photos, and there are no photos of any of the health issues described — no fleas, no ticks, no obese malamutes, no internal parasites.

I would have enjoyed the book more if it contained more practical tips on malamute training, more precise data on dog food, and more facts about doggie illnesses. Only two pages (p. 44-45) were given to basic dog commands. No data at all was presented regarding malamute caloric intake, nor what proportion of calories should come from protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Historical data and statistics would have been appreciated for common doggie ailments, such as heartworm, kennel cough, and parvovirus.
