I remembered it from high school chemistry, one of those experiments where we made hydrogen. It was more of an acidic sensation on the palate than a real smell, but I recognized it. The pile of spent fuel at the bottom was beginning to outgas. Next would come the fire to end all fires.…

A private detective working in Wilmington, North Carolina, is found dead in a gas-station restroom, apparently poisoned. But when her body sets off radiation alarms in the pathologist’s office, suspicion falls on the nearby Helios nuclear power plant, a heavily guarded facility with supposedly fail-safe procedures.

As the FBI, local police, and the power plant’s own security team investigate, ex-cop Cam Richter, head of the agency that employed the dead woman, begins his own inquiries. What was his detective investigating? And how could one person be poisoned by radiation without others being exposed?

Cam soon finds himself up against powerful forces that will stop at nothing to keep the plant’s problems secret. The most vulnerable part of Helios is its “moonpool”—the radioactive storage pond that cools spent but volatile reactor fuel and must be kept completely full. Racing against time, Cam discovers an inside threat, a plan to use the plant’s own systems to begin an unstoppable, disastrous sequence of events.

I have to say, it was the ending that stays with me. It was a great read as all of Mr. Deutermann's novels are, but the twist at the end (involving a waterbottle of all things) still stays with me to this day in that Cam Richter was humanized after his supposedly being beaten by the "villain".....well, read the book, it is a greatly entertaining "can't put down" read !

a well written book - a believable plot and hero. The story moves along quite well - You want to cheer for the good guys and boo the villains. There was a hint that there might be a sequel - I am hoping so.

Perhaps if I hadn't read Mr. Deutermann's first two novels featuring the German Shepherds, I might have liked this story better. It was too technically-oriented. I stuck with it to the end, hoping that it would be as interesting and fun to read as the other two books. Any time he again decides to write about Frick and Frack, he will have my rapt attention.

I love the Cam Richter series and each book gets better and better. I read a lot of hard-boiled/detective novels, and Deutermann's are among the best of the genre. He's an intelligent writer--his books aren't cheap, easy reads, but you'll appreciate them more and remember the characters because you'll feel a real bond to them.

I love Deutermann and have read and enjoyed most of his novels until this one. This was a disappointment: poor character development, difficult to follow plot, too much about his dogs.

Do you want a real beach read?? Well you got it in Deutermann's new novel
The Moonpool. This book is as good as his two previous books , and The Cat Dancers, and Spider Mountian ,were super. As good as any of his other works. But all of Deutermann books are the best. If you have not read P t Deutermann, you have missed one of the best writers in America today.!!!!
