Goethe's Faust is rhymed in the original, and English translations that reproduce this are much more pleasurable and quotable. What I did was read Atkins to understand what is going on and then read Arndt or Kaufmann to really enjoy it. Let me qualify that by saying that Atkins (like the Hollanders with Dante) achieves his own style of beauty with his translation. Goethe was a very enlightened, mystical person and Faust's verses especially reflect this.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (IPA: ˈgøːtə (Goethe Society pronunciation) .

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (IPA: ˈgøːtə (Goethe Society pronunciation)), born Johann Wolfgang Goethe (28 August 1749–22 March 1832) was a German polymath: he was a painter, novelist, dramatist, poet, humanist, scientist, philosopher, and for ten years chief minister of state at Weimar. What set Goethe’s book apart from other such novels was its expression of unbridled longing for a joy beyond possibility, its sense of defiant rebellion against authority, and, above all, its predominant es that pointed the way toward the Romantic movement.

It stands on its own dramatic feet without Faust II and is frequently performed, even though it leaves the hero’s destiny and the outcome of the wager in abeyance. At the end of our play, one sees Gretchen lying on her prison pallet uttering, Ophelia-like, deranged shreds of truth that pierce Faust’s inmost being.
