I don't know if it's because I went to school within a few blocks of the badlands, if it's because I love Philly and miss it dearly, or if this book is just excellent but I believe this maybe the best book I have ever read. The story is so realistic, the characters so dead on that it is impossible not to get immediately wrapped up in the story. I laughed and cried, I was scared for the characters, I cheered for the good guys and hated the bad guys. I felt like they were real people I would meet on the streets of Philly. I read it from cover to cover in one day. I actually put this book as a must read as my status update on FB. Truly a work of art and I'm thankful Steve Lopez wrote this, I'm just mad I didn't read it sooner. I love you Philly! Weird accents, dangerous neighborhoods, dirty SEPTA, gritty streets, Libery Bell, "Iggles" and all!!!

This is one of my favorite books. It's an easy read but very compelling.. you won't be able to put it down! I usually prefer non-fiction, and this is fiction of course, but it's not an unbelievable/fantastical story... everything in the book sounds like it could be a true story. Highly recommended for teens to adults!

Overall, a good book. Some of the characters are a little trope-y, but overall, it's a really excellent picture of the depth of urban life in the poorer parts of Philadelphia.

Tragic. Beautiful. Riveting... any person who lives or ever has lived in Philadelphia must read this book. It provides a 360 degree view of crime in Philadelphia, from crooked politicians to the drug gangs inner workings. I will have had all 303pgs read over a weekend.
Wonderful!
