It had been easier to organise Jess’s social life when the family lived a few houses away from her best friend. She’s busy,’ Jess snapped.

Now Jess looked at her mother’s diary, forgotten on the counter beside the fridge, and flipped to today. Lucky Mum, Jess thought. Imagine being able to swan off on a school day and get your hair done. There was no sign of Wilbur either. Wilbur was Jess’s cat, a ten-year-old tabby with unusual grey markings and a huge fluffy tail that shot up into the air if he was upset. It had been easier to organise Jess’s social life when the family lived a few houses away from her best friend. Her grandmother’s birthday is tonight.

If she’d thought that presenting a television show with the weight of guilt hanging round her neck was hard, then having to fly home to her daughter and husband had been ten times worse. irony, Tom seemed to have decided in her absence that he and Abby needed to make an effort at their marriage, and when she arrived home. On Friday evening she’d been greeted by a big hello hug and a reservation at her favourite local restaurant. We’ve both been under a lot of stress, Tom said. Can we put all that behind us and start again? Even Jess was in on it.

Best of Friends book. I usually found Cathy Kelly's books were easy to read and comforting in many level. This one though was abit of a drag to read. it's like reading really boring fairy tales for adults.

Cathy Kelly Best of Friends. You need a cup of tea,’ she said, hurrying to boil the kettle. Then she produced the ultimate bribe of chocolate buttons, and Daniel grudgingly got onto the floor with Jack to play jungle train. Nothing out of the ordinary,’ she went on, ‘just I’m a bit weary. Mind you, isn’t everyone?’ ‘It’s good to hear you worrying a bit about yourself,’ Lizzie soothed, checking the appointment book. You do too much, Sally. Good to see how each of their lives unfold to intermingle with the common bond of their dear friend Sally as she learns she has breast cancer & is ill. Some good life lessons are included.

This is a great portrait of adult friendships of real women. Not just fun, drinks and lunches. But real and lively. It shows how hard it can be.

Cathy Kelly is known for writing about engaging women characters and following them through the various trials of their lives. She does it again with this book. Her style and choice of topics reminds me very much of the bestselling Irish author Maeve Binchy.

Best of Friends follows four women of different ages as they struggle with families, careers, infidelities, and even death in their small town in Ireland. Cathy Kelly's descriptive storyteling makes you feel that you know each of these women personally. I was attracted to some characters more than others but by the end of the book I cared about them all. She is especially adept at moving from one character to another without ever creating confusion or disjointedness.

If you want a nice leisurely read with a satisying ending then this book is for you.
