A "Memory," is a very small book about a young boy, Philippe Grimbert, who narrates the book, he is living in Paris with his parents who own a sportswear shop. His parents seem quiet, sad and withdrawn, however they both care significantly about their bodies and exercise everyday perhaps to an extreme.

Philippe Grimbert est psychanalyste.

by Philippe Grimbert. This short but powerfully haunting novel gripped me from the start. It’s the story of Phillip, a shy Jewish boy growing up in France in the years following the invasion of Paris by the Nazis. Through his confidante Rose, we learn of an explosive family secret that turned this timid child into a strong and accepting adult. An excellent read that ends much too soon. Philippe Grimbert was 15 when he first learned that he had a brother. Grimbert insists that only one character in the book has no real-life parallel. Not only that, but his parents had had a tempestuous affair - as their partners were sent to their deaths in Nazi camps. Now he has written a bestselling novel about their story. Instead of having a cousin disclosing the family secrets, the novel has a friend called Louise whom the little Philippe befriends and from whom he learns about his family's secret history. He is forgiving, now, of his parents and all the secrets they kept from him - for example, they let him grow up thinking he was a Catholic.

Jetzt - fast 50 Jahre später - hat sich der Autor Philippe Grimbert entschieden, die bewegende Geschichte seiner Familie aufzuschreiben. Format Paperback 184 pages.

Beautifully written, based on a true story (the author's own story). Not another holocaust testimonial, but a story about family secrets and how historical events can twist people's lives, even before they are born. Very good translation from its original French.

This translation from the French of A Secret by child psychiatrist Philippe Grimbert was made into a wonderful film. The memoir is even better. It continues to be a best-seller in France and is a great addition to second-generation literature.
