As a novelist, Greeley had his faults. Endless repetitions of almost identical situations (Chicago Board of Trade, stolen valor as a teenager, perfect sexual and soul union thwarted by the Roman Catholic policy of the celibate priesthood). His characters are almost all over-achievers: the tallest, most handsome, best athlete, best student, omni-competent in business, supernaturally charming ...

But in "An Occasion of Sin", Greeley is able to transcend this and give us not only a riveting story, but one with lessons on the nature and meaning of sainthood. The question at hand is, can God really have made a saint of John Cardinal McGlynn, a reputed "son-of-a-bitch." The answer is that, of course, He can. In fact, I believe that all of God's saints are made from sons-of-bitches. It is the only material from which (post-Eden, anyhow) He has to choose.

This is essentially a detective story, with Father Laurence McAuliffe in the role of detective. He has five mysteries to work out concerning the life of "Jumping Johnny McGlynn." Clues are left all along the way, but it will be a clever reader indeed who is able to pick up on them.

But it is also a love story. A story of thwarted love that finds another, perhaps even more powerful, expression. As the novel concludes, the protagonist notes: "Fortunately there are many different kinds of love in the world." This is a true saying, and "An Occasion of Sin" is a great way to explore those ways.

This for me was a can't put down story. I enjoyed it. The author is a Catholic priest who covers up nothing about what he has seen in the Church -good or bad. This story is about a priest who was killed and was being investigated for sainthood due to his death being considered martyrdom. The two priests called upon to investigate him, find out there was a lot more about him than meets the eye.

Up to his standard. It will make a good addition to my library.

Greeley's fiction is wonderfully true to life.
