Description

A Biography of Dorothy Eden. Willa, with her skinny body and sharp eager face, had always wanted to be larger than life, so she made all the events with which she was associated subjects of exaggerated importance.

A Biography of Dorothy Eden. Chapter 1. THE SOMBER SWEDISH COUNTRYSIDE tipped beneath the wings of the plane, endless spruce forests lighted at intervals by autumn-tinted birches, outcrops of rocks like bare bones, small dark-red houses that looked as if they had been dropped haphazardly into the forest. It was too late to read Willa’s letter again. In any case Grace almost knew it by heart. She was very different from herself, Grace thought, with her sober ways.

This was a very fun read right until the end, when the author for some reason puts the story on fast-forward. There were also instances of foreshadowing that never really get addressed, specifically with her cousin's upstairs neighbor.

Anyhow, I really liked the location and the time period -- Sweden in the 1960s. Lots of the story reads like an Agatha Christie with a cast of characters who keep bumping into one another. There is even a big 'get all the suspects together' scene in the book, which was fun.

I haven't read anything else of Eden's and read this because it was recommended as a 'modern Gothic' novel. It is a short book and I finished it in a day. Would have been better if the ending had been given another twenty or so pages . . .

I had read Dorothy Eden's books in the '60's and liked them. However, I think I must have missed this one. "Waiting for Willa" was a long, dreary read with a very sad ending. Gothic is one thing, but I was very disappointed when Willa is actually found - dead (spoiler) - and our heroine (supposed to be the level headed cousin) seems about to make the same mistake in her choice of a married lover.

I don't think Dorothy Eden was capable of writing a bad book! Even her earlier stuff, the Gothic romances were pretty good, all things considered. Then later on in life, she wrote many epic books based on historical and geographical facts and situations. So Willa kind of falls between those two stages of her writing.

It's a good story. The characters are well drawn and the good guys are very likeable. Of course, you don't know who the bad guys are until the end and the end surprised me the first time I read it.

I think you might find this as good as I did.

This was an enjoyable mystery with a little romance thrown in. It was fast paced and even though I figured out who did it before the end, I liked this book

This story is somewhat dated, but the themes are universal, and I have always enjoyed Dorothy Eden's books. I must have read this one at least 5 times over the years and it never disappoints. It is well written in a distinctive style and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys classic mystery stories with a little romance thrown in; give it a try!

This story takes you to Sweden in search of a friend. Grace remembered the old safe word she and her friend used when they were growing up. Immediately she travels to Sweden and tries to get to know Willa's boyfriends and friends to try to get some clue about the mysterious 'Gustav' that Willa ran off with, married and vanished with into the wintery forest.

I recently discovered this Author and have been reading ALL of her books, she is truly talented and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the story. Highly recommend her for Suspense, Mystery and Romance Books.
Captivating mystery/suspense tale with a strong, intelligent heroine, her "bad-girl" cousin, the eponymous Willa, and a touch of romance with a male character who becomes increasingly appealing as the story unfolds. Richly atmospheric. One of Eden's best contemporaries. Highly recommended.
