Steven Carroll is a beautiful, lyrical writer and his style makes reading a pleasure. Whilst this book sits alongside his earlier books with recurring characters and snippets that fill out details in those stories, 'The Gift of Speed' stands on its own. Set in the heady, liberated days following the end of WW2, it gently juxtaposes social class, city and farm life, the desire for travel and the desire for settling down, the old ways and progress.

Steven Carroll was born in Melbourne. His first novel, Remember Me, Jimmy James, was published in 1992. The Art of the Engine Driver (2001) and The Gift of Speed (2004) were shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award, which the final book in the trilogy, The Time We Have Taken, won in 2008.
