The Other Devil's Name book.

The Other Devil's Name book. Elizabeth Ferrars is a mistress of mystification and shrewd observation. Both talents are employed with her usual skill in this latest addition to her considerable oeuvre.

Elizabeth Ferrars (6 September 1907 – 30 March 1995), born Morna Doris MacTaggart, was a British crime writer. She was born in Rangoon (currently Yangon), Burma into a Scottish timber and rice-trading family. Her early years were in the hands of a German nanny, and the initial intention was that she should be sent to Berlin to complete her education.

Elizabeth Ferrars 1907-1995 One of the most distinguished crime writers of her generation, Elizabeth Ferrars was born in Rangoon and came to Britain at the age of six. She was a pupil at Bedales school between 1918 and 1924, studied journalism at London University and published her first crime novel, Give a Corpse a Bad Name, in 1940, the year that she met her second husband, academic Robert Brown.

E. X. Ferrars is often relegated to the second rank of British Mystery writers of the 20th century but having enjoyed this book, that seems very unfair. Active from the 1940's til her death in the mid 90's, most of her books were stand-alones. However, this quiet puzzle tale belongs to the Andrew Basnett series. Basnett, a retired professor of botany, is approached by an old colleague to help with a disturbing letter that her sister had received. The letter suggested that a murder had been committed and a body buried, but not when or who. Considering a list of the missing members of the small community, they begin the process of elimination.

After all the horror that exists in forensic mysteries and serial killer stories, there is something soothing about a nice genteel old fashioned British murder mystery. Suspects sip sherry and go over the eccentricities of other suspects. If unpleasant things are found trapped in the roots of trees that overhang the local stream or are dug up in someone's garden, they are not too closely examined. Schools of red herrings swim by the reader, making it less and less clear who might have murdered and who might have been murdered.

Recommended for a change of pace.
