Description

Mystical Paths is the story of Nicholas Darrow, son of Jonathon Darrow and inheritor of his psychic abilities. More so than the other books in the series this reads as a thriller as much as melodrama.

Mystical Paths is the story of Nicholas Darrow, son of Jonathon Darrow and inheritor of his psychic abilities. Susan Howatch has a unique formula in her writing that is intensely readable while being satisfying to the mind and heart. In this story Nicholas becomes increasing preoccupied with the death of golden boy Christian Aysgarth, even while succumbing to the temptations to abuse his psychic gift. As he is increasingly drawn away from God, he flirts with madness and encounters unexpected evil.

No writing today can equal Howatch's ability to write compelling novels that combine theology and psychology in a complex, fast-moving plot offering beautifully delineated characters and the suspense of a mystery/thriller. Told with all the drama, intelligence, and emotional depth we have come to expect from Susan Howatch, Mystical Paths is a breathtaking novel about the powerful, often painful, but finally indestructible ties between parent and child. And like its four highly praised predecessors in the Church of England series, it is a novel that celebrates the redeeming power of self-knowledge and faith. Intelligent, compelling, and fascinating. The author’s most famous and well-loved work, the Starbridge series, six self-contained yet interconnected novels that explore the history of the Church of England through the 20th century.

I read this entire series some 15 years ago, but remembered not a word about this novel. It's gratifying to read it anew.

Nick is a fascinating character, hell bent (an unfortunate phrase!) on ruining his life with too many sexual adventures and the misuse of his God-given gifts. Although there is no explicit sex, it's artfully implied!

In the end, as happens to so many characters, he gets straightened out. But what I love about Howatch's characters, is that that happens infrequently. Lives aren't just perfect, are they? We're all flawed and we make a mess of things.

Highly recommended.

I love the Starbridge series of novels and the St Benets series that continues the stories. As he is increasingly drawn away from God, he flirts with madness and encounters unexpected evil. The finale is terrifying and intense. If you're like me you won't be able to put this down. Highly recommended.

Howatch's writing is first-rate, and I have some interest in the lives of people who
'go into' the Church, but this was not what I was hoping for. The characters and plot
seemed to chase their own tails in ever-narrowing circuits. I found it tiring and
boring and asked myself whether I cared about these people. The answer was 'no,' and
so I put the book down about a third of the way through. Probably not a fair try, but
life is too short and spring is here.

This is book # 5 in this series and deals with the life of Nicholas Darrow. The interesting thing for me is how intertwined she has created the characters and the story. Nicholas is to an extent an image of his father Jon and shares the same psychic powers his father has. Very enjoyable read just as all of the other 5 are. Am involved in # 6 currently and it is just as good. Very enlightening as to religion as well as how folks deal with each other. Good read.

As a baby boomer this novel was a nostalgic experience rendered with exquisite balance and style. The tensions and contradictions we experienced are captured in vivid detail and provide for a great tale of discovery.

This series of novels is beyond stellar. I reread them every few years to remind me why I love literature and why I write myself. Just so so wonderful. Besides learning things, the spiritual confrontation the novels elicit is just such a contribution to the reading public. I always feel grateful to the author when I read them
even more enjoyable than the first book in the series
