This book shows that there was a time where giants walked among u. Stefan Zweig is great, as usual, but the binding and format of the book is not very pleasant.

This book shows that there was a time where giants walked among us. Today it is politically incorrect to be better, smarter, richer, more powerfull or more driven then the next. It is actively discouraged. But read this book and know that it is possible to change the world, if only you dare to serve an idea higher than yourself.

I didn't esteem this acclaimed novella when I first read it on assignment in a German Lit class at Harvard in 1962. Perhaps the class met too early in the morning, or perhaps I didn't respond to its polished conventionality, its old-fashioned artifice in that era of exaggerated literary experimentalism.

Even in the trash horror film Gremlins one of the protagonists already said (freely translated from the German version I know): If you create a world for things - they will come.

Dec 4, 2016 · 1 min read. 20 years ago I wrote in my German dystopic novel Rabenwelt (Raven World) that the economic system we created potentially functions perfectly well entirely without humans. It only needs algorithms to operate. Even in the trash horror film Gremlins one of the protagonists already said (freely translated from the German version I know): If you create a world for things - they will come. There are endless other writers, sages, thinkers who warned, over and again. We are the first known species creating an environment that renders itself superfluous.
