Books by cormac mccarthy. McCarthy puts most other American writers to shame. A startling encounter on a New York subway platform leads two strangers to a run-down tenement where a life or death decision must be made. In that small apartment, "Black" and "White," as the two men are known, begin a conversation that leads each back through his own history, mining the origins of two fundamentally opposing world-views.

McCarthy's second published play, it was first produced by the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago on May 18, 2006, and it traveled to New York City later that same year. Some consider it to be more a novel than a true play, partly because of its subtitle, "A Novel in Dramatic Form".

Cormac McCarthy’s The Sunset Limited is a lean, spare dialectic between two characters named simply Black and White. Black, a recovering addict who found Jesus in prison, saves White, an aging professor, who attempts to kill himself by jumping in front of a commuter train, the Sunset Limited. Still, some readers may feel cheated out of McCarthy’s rich prose in this bare story (they need only to pick up Blood Meridian or The Road or All the Pretty Horses, of course).

The historical Sunset Limited was a transcontinental train that crossed the American south from Atlantic to Pacific. Metaphorically, to ride the sunset limited is to take the mythic train west, to go to the western wall, to sail over the edge of the world. The literal train in McCarthy’s The Sunset Limited is a New York subway, but the destination of the suicidal professor White is the solitude of death, an escape from the hell of other people, from the human history of war and genocide, and from his own intractable alienation

Published by Cormac McCarthy in 2006, The Sunset Limited takes a strikingly simple premise-a conversation between two men-and uses it to pack a philosophical punch so large we're amazed any theater can contain it. As the play opens, White (the characters are referred to by their race) has just been saved from certain death by Black, and the two men have returned to Black's apartment. So is The Sunset Limited simple? Yes, if you're counting numbers of characters and costume changes, and considering the elaborateness of the set. The answer is a resounding no, however, if you consider the subject at hand, which is none other than the meaning of life.
