I'm going to do this review in sections. I'm 1/4 through it and, although I'm enjoying the author's writing, I'm frustrated with the main character, Daisy, and her choice of men. Rupert, her childhood friend, is handsome, a soldier, is very cool, knows her, and loves her. But the idiot is instead drawn to a cad who sleeps with women without regard to his seed, who declares he's like that because he thought he couldn't have her. She seems angry about his cavalier attitude, but still, Daisy finds him irresistible and is so much more drawn to him than her wonderful Rupert. Even his smell: a cigarette smoker with morning breath is not attractive, but the author actually wrote that into a morning scene, that she kissed him and enjoyed his scent. Gag me. I can find nothing redeeming about him. He takes liberties with her because he knows he can. But flirts, then sleeps with others, all the while he's married to someone else. Seriously, Daisy needs a shrink... Will write more as I go along. Right now I'm ticked and a "3" is all I can muster...later..
Okay. Done.
A bit of a spoiler so read on if you don't mind that...
Let's just say all's well that ends well. She finally gets a brain and sees things as someone with her intelligence should have, uh, like a year before.
Lots of things happen in the war (WWI) causing her to grow up. I'll up my review to a 4 1/2. Except I'm still ticked at Daisy for being stupid. I know, I know, the heart wants what it wants, but yuck... he may have had raw animal magnetism, but how could an intelligent woman who worked for equality for women want a future with a cad and womanizer? Being drawn to him is one thing, but to actually declare she loves him? Ew.

Great story, lots of detail about the life and times of pre world war I in England. The main character is an appealing young woman who often shows the reader a self examining, reflective side that is interesting and thoughtful. The author does a good job of making her character complex and reflective. Its a book that keeps your attention both through the twists and turns of the plot and the interesting issues that face the main character and her response to them.

This is a good story. I enjoyed it. It takes place before and during the first world war in London and it's countryside. It is also a romance.

It took a little while to hook me, and the writing style is more simplistic than I prefer - but it's still a sweet story with great values, and worth the time.
