The Pit and the Pendulum is about a prisoner of Spanish Inquisition and presents a unique imagery in the minds of the reader. While I was reading Fall of House Usher, I understood that Poe had a thing for the burial of bodies. Seriously, he was in love with that plot element. Ahoy, A Novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket is the only novel written by Poe and it is a mixed bag in terms of storytelling.

by Edgar Allan Poe. Narrated by William Roberts. The horrors of the Spanish Inquisition, with its dungeon of death, and the overhanging gloom on the House of Usher demonstrate unforgettably the unique imagination of Edgar Allan Poe. Unerringly, he touches upon some of our greatest nightmares premature burial, ghostly transformation and words from beyond the grave. Written in the 1840s, they have retained their power to shock and frighten even now. About this title.

What makes these tales so memorable is that Poe imbues every aspect of his short stories with a sense of doom and despair, making even the pictures on the walls, the draperies and window panes and books and plants and stones sound ominous, and elevates murder, cruelty and various manners of dying, to an art form. smik, January 22, 2010.

Poe was and is a Master of his Craft! Anything which was Written by the Master of Storytelling is worth Reading. The FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER if my Memory serves me correctly is without the Shadow of a doubt a Chilling Tale as are many of Poe’s other Short Stories. As mentioned earlier below, it is now some years hence that I Read a concise Volume of his Tales of Mystery And Imagination and I remember being enthralled by all of them which I literally Read from Cover to Cover

The weather was wet and the wind had blown all the leaves from the trees. I was traveling alone. I was going toward a dark and strange house - the House of Usher. Why had I come to this lonely place? I knew Roderick Usher - the owner of the house.

The weather was wet and the wind had blown all the leaves from the trees. I was riding my horse across the wet, empty land. We were old friends, but we had not met for many years. A few weeks ago, I had received a letter from Roderick. I had been riding all day and it was now late. The pale sun was low in the sky when I arrived at the House of Usher. A large lake of black water surrounded the house. I stopped by the lake and looked at the house.

Written in the 1840s, this collection of classic horror stories touches upon some of our greatest nightmares, and has retained the power to shock and frighten even now; includes the title stories, as well as "The Black Cat," "The Masque of the Red Death," and "The Cask of Amontillado."

I've been wanting to "read" some of the classics and this is really well done. There are several stories and I'm only through the Pit and the Pendulum so far. I'm listening to the audio CD version, my idea of the best way to read a lot of books.

The phenomenal Edgar Allen Poe. He's the master of dark poetry. This CD has a sample of his best and darkest stories. The narrator did a Super job; nothing takes away from his rhythmic and horrifying stories. The narrator accomplished a sensational task, reading aloud the master's works. All around great quality and awesome stories!

I am a great fan of Poe and really enjoyed listening to this. If you love Poe you will like this. Only complaint, wish there were about three or four more cd's to this package.
