When Tully saw the rich ore in the walls of the silver mine shaft at Officer’s Ridge, he knew that nothing - not the biggest, toughest mining operator in Colorado, not love, loyalty, pity or friendship - was going to stand between him and his dream of wealth and power.

TULLY GIBBS WAS A KILLER. A bullet sang, and Tully Gibbs hit the dirt. It had been easy working for Frank Chess, working for Rhino Hulst. Running his crooked errands. Tully was a killer-trained, highly skilled, merciless. But he was pinned down, exposed to the hail of rifle fire: shots slamming past his ear, spraying the bitter dust into his mouth and eyes, with his own gun a deadly three yards away from his hand. Right or wrong, Tully Gibbs had staked his claim. Losing his crooked money in the nearest poker game. Drinking it up in the nearest saloon.

The end justifying the means when Tully Gibbs swindles his way into Kevin Russel's friendship to get a chance at working Russel's mining properties

The end justifying the means when Tully Gibbs swindles his way into Kevin Russel's friendship to get a chance at working Russel's mining properties. Pretending to have been a pal of Kevin's son, Gibbs counters local opposition, bests roughshod Hodes and almost wins Sarah Moffit's loyalty. But it isn't until the mines are threatened and Gibbs keeps pitching that he's squared all around. Modernized western stuff.

The cover picture is very misleading, it probably was a stock painting some one pulled out and used without having read the book. The story is set in the early 1950's and built around a Korean War vet and mining somewhere in the western states. It is an interesting and different story. I enjoyed it.

Tully Gibbs staked his claim on the richest silver lode in Colorado, and he was determined to keep and get his share. He was a hard man even before becoming a miner, as he had fought in the Civil War, spent time in a prisoner of war camp, and had fought his way all through life. And no one was going to prevent him from mining this silver, not even the biggest mining corporation in Colorado. Nothing was going to stand between his vision of wealth and power. Luke Short knew of the things he wrote as he was a man who located his westerns on ground he personally knew. He had done many things prior to becoming a writer so he had lived an adventuresome life, and it shows in his writing. I can most heartily endorse his work, and this one is as good as any.

The 1st thing you need to know about Silver Rock is that this is set in the 1950's not the 1850's. Thus except for a hidden sniper scene, the book is pretty much bereft of any gunplay. There are a couple of good fistfight scenes. After reading the first few scenes of the book, I was reminded of the Spencer Tracy film "Bad Day At Black Rock", a great movie which is also a modern western. Both book and movie deal with a war veteran returning to find something about the family of a dead brother-in-arms. The similarities end there. Silver Rock deals with Tully Gibbs' efforts to mine a valuable but forgotten claim with his friend's father. There is little action and a standard subplot involving a girl, a jealous boyfriend and Tully's guilty secret. All in all, a disappointing effort from a Western Master.

My husband is an avid reader of Louis L'Amour. I don't know if he liked this author or not, but the transfer was ok.
