Set in Depression Era San Francisco and introducing the world to Samuel Spade, The Maltese Falcon (1929) became a detective story that many in the genre still try to measure up to today. A classic that helped change the way writers told detective stories, Hammett was blacklisted during the MacCarthy era. He couldn’t find work because no one would hire him.
