Noah Gordon is in a class by himself

Noah Gordon is in a class by himself. I have read several of his books and have never found one that was not intellectually stimulating, intricately plotted and totally great. The Jerusalem Diamond explores the world of high end diamond exchanges and the diamond cutters who enhance the stones' beauty. In addition to reading a great story, the reader gets to learn more about diamonds than he ever thought to know. 15 people found this helpful.

Noah Gordon is in a class by himself. That said, I did not enjoy The Jerusalem Diamond as much as I did his other books. I found the switching between present time and the historical periods somewhat disorienting, even though the historical story was clearly indicated by the use of italic font. As a whole, the story didn't quite hang together and was vaguely unsatisfying.

The Jerusalem Diamond book. Let me start with - I love Noah Gordon! I first read Mr Gordon's Cole series - The Physician, Shaman & Matters of Choice. Loved them all! The Jerusalem Diamond is an earlier book by Mr Gordon. It took me a little while to "get into" the book, but once I did, it came to life, as all of his books do. He not only develops characters who come to life, but he intertwines the stories with such interesting history, I find myself unable to put the book down! And unlike some other books, I never Let me start with - I love Noah Gordon!

Noah Gordon has had outstanding international success. The Physician, soon to be a motion picture, has been called a modern classic, and booksellers at the Madrid Book Fair voted it one of the 10 best-loved books of all time. Shaman was awarded the James Fenimore Cooper Prize for historical fiction. Both of these books, and five of the author’s other novels-The Rabbi, The Death Committee, The Jerusalem Diamond, Matters of Choice, and The Winemaker-are published in digital formats by Barcelona eBooks and Open Road Integrated Media.

You take advantage of our nature, he said, as if scolding a stupid child. Through our love, you are not forced to wear the yellow hat. You and your family are allowed to live in a fine house like proper Christians instead of within the Gietto. But all this is not enough. Still you must pester me about dead Jews.

This is an early work by Noah Gordon and a very different kind of story. While it is not "The Physician", it is still a great read, although the story would not have suffered had there been fewer descriptions of the main characters' sexual activities and bodily functions (ho-hum). The back and forth in time is a very effective device, especially for this novel. The historical information was interesting as well as that regarding diamonds and
the profession of diamond cutting. The novel also gives an in-depth look into Jewish customs and beliefs as well as life in Israel. The author's
style is extremely engaging in this book as all the books I've read by him. For me it is historical fiction at its' best.

Noah Gordon is in a class by himself. I have read several of his books and have never found one that was not intellectually stimulating, intricately plotted and totally great. This man's obvious love of research and his attention to detail make his books a memorable reading experience. The Jerusalem Diamond explores the world of high end diamond exchanges and the diamond cutters who enhance the stones' beauty. In addition to reading a great story, the reader gets to learn more about diamonds than he ever thought to know.

I have read The Winemaker and the Cole Trilogy, also by Noah Gordon, and really enjoyed them. This book was a bit disappointing. Perhaps that is because I am not really familiar with the Jewish religion and customs. The story line was a bit difficult to follow as it went back to various eras of history interspersed with details of the story in the present. There were also a lot of Hebrew words used in telling the story which I am not sure I fully understood. There were several surprises in the plot, but overall I found it difficult to really feel involved in this book.

At this point, I've read all of Noah Gordon's stories. They always fascinating and filled with rich historical details. I love his story telling and craftsmanship of the written word.

Well, at least for me. One capsule review likened the book to The da Vinci Code, which is way off-base, from my point of view. But it is a well-written and engaging story, one that kept me up past my bedtime, as it mixed historical periods, a romance, a mystery, and interesting details of the diamond business, history, and Jewish life and culture.

I loved Noah Gordon’s book “ The Last Jew” when I read it and chose this book for that reason.
He blends modernity with history in an engaging manner. I was captivated by the details about the archeology and the Temple relics in Israel. I enjoyed this book very much.

Very slow and tedious read. The love affair was mildly interesting. After reading Gordon's other books, I was disappointed with this one.
Intrigue, some history, some mystery, all of the good things that make a book by Noah Gordon a pleasurable experience from beginning to end.. Who would have thought that the history of a diamond could be fleshed out so well and with so much clever interesting characters.
