The Romance of Atlantis book. Taylor Caldwell's own grandfather, who owned a publishing company, advised her father to destroy the book immediately! He felt like she would have had to plagiarize someone else's work once he read the book in it's entirety. Jess Stern convinced her to finally have the book published in (or around) 1980.

The streets were veiled in a yellowish gloom through which the lofty domes and tall pillars gleamed grotesquely in the obscure moonlight thick curtain that hung over the city like a pall. The air was hot, motionless, languid, causing men to breathe laboriously in a depressed atmosphere and the animal life to scurry about in aimless apprehension. Mahius, wondering at this sudden conference, glanced furtively at the Empress. Her profile held the eye with its pride and strength

THE ROMANCE OF ATLANTIS brings to life all the dazzling splendor of that lost kingdom. The incredible thing about this novel, is that Taylor Caldwell wrote this when she was 12! The book is an entertaining twist of maybe accidential cold war history back in the time of Atlantis. However, Atlantis is threatened by powerful neighboring states. Weapon system disarment, overtaxation and a decadent and lazy culture are all discussed against a young and cold weathered enemy.

Having bought this book 4 X now........keep lending it to people and not getting it back...seems it keeps getting more expensive. Paid $ 1.75 the first time. Now almost $ 20.00, which is well worth the price.....not letting it out of my sight.EVER!
It's one of the BEST books ever!!
Remarkably parallel to today's world. I felt like she was writing about NOW : atom bombs, global warming, cars, planes, AC not to mention wars and floods and a philosophy we could do with today.
For a 12 year old absolutely remarkable as are all her books all which I have. To this day she is and will be my all time favorite author.
Read it and you may never think about this world we live in the same way.

This is a great novel on many levels. On one level it is a very enjoyable story that has emperors, an empress, romance, intrigue, love and betrayal. On another level it is filled with wisdom concerning the rise and fall of great civilizations and the relationship between government and religion.

I wasn't looking for wisdom or a trashy romance novel when I bought this book. I was looking for more details of Atlantean life. I had just read "A Dweller on Two Planets" by Phylos the Tibetan and it had amazing descriptions of the government, architecture, method of travel, scientific achievements and geography of Atlantis. I had also read what Edgar Cayce had to say in his many reading for people who were embodied on Atlantis. Because I had heard that Taylor Caldwell could read the akashic records (even as a young girl of 12) I hoped to get more details about Atlantean life. I wasn't disappointed!

In the course of telling the tragic story of an Atlantean Empress during the last days of the sinking of that great continent, Caldwell manages to give us a detailed description of what life in Atlantis was like. Many things I had read about elsewhere are in the story such as the Temple Beautiful and it's rejuvenation chamber. The famous moat around the capital city is also described and is amazingly similar to what is said in Dweller on Two Planets and even what Plato wrote. But what I enjoyed most were the many descriptions of the white marble buildings that climbed up the hillsides with their hanging gardens filled with flowers and birds. One thing I didn't find was a single cause in the novel for the sinking of Atlantis. The usual reasons were there however, such as the corrupt society and wrath of the god's, misuse of energy weapons and sun activity. Sitchin fans will be surprised (or not) to find that in the novel Atlantean scientists discovered a "10th planet" perturbing the other planets of the solar system right before things started to fall apart.

So if you are a serious student of Atlantis or just looking for a good romance then I think this is a must read.

The story and characters of a story set in ancient Atlantis is spell binding. I bought a copy
from a second hand store in the 1970s and felt inspired, one dark night, to find it in my over stuffed
book cases to reread it. It was damaged and so I ordered another copy from Amazon Books. I am amazed at how fresh the story is and how it seems prophetic about our
current global struggles compounded by environmental issues of pollution and global warming, fraught, of late,
with many tidal waves, earth quakes and volcanic eruptions etc that disrupt international travel. The book seems
prophetic too about the corrupt practices people are becoming aware of in religious, scientific, political and media institutions. The book shows the materialism and weakness of modern society where welfare hand outs or a lush, sensual, materialistic way of life keep the populace subserviant but also weak with no sense of ethics or morals in their conduct towards others. Taylor Caldwell dreamed of this story with herself as principal character, an Atlantean princess/empress, in a life time lived in Atlantis. During this lifetime
Atlantis supposedly sank into the sea, due to misuse of nuclear power that had fallen into the wrong hands of young, vigorous but dangerous powers.
It is an enthralling read and seems as if channelled and prophetic.

I tried this first of Taylor Caldwell's novels. I will try at least one more because she supposedly was a good or great writer.

This book is NOT good; it does seem like it was written by a 12-year old. She should have waited a few more years and revised this significantly.

The author brings up tales of nuclear power, modern transportation, communication, long before they were common knowledge. She writes a credible love story , with lots of insights, on people , emotions & social problems. The family kept this hidden for 60 years before publishing. They were afraid that the book wasn't proper, and they would be labeled as crazy. If you have any interest in past lives or reincarnation , you might find this book interesting.

This is a romance novel, but with a political intrigue element that will keep male and female interested indeed. The incredible thing about this novel, is that Taylor Caldwell wrote this when she was 12! The book is an entertaining twist of maybe accidential cold war history back in the time of Atlantis. Weapon system disarment, overtaxation and a decadent and lazy culture are all discussed against a young and cold weathered enemy. Sound familiar. This should be published agAIN, JUST BECAUSE IT IS GOOD.

For a child to have written these ideas in the early 20th century is amazing. The similar ideas and politics of our now early 21st century is astounding.
A 12 year old girl (Taylor Caldwell) prodigy wrote this but didn't publish it until many years later. I had read several of her books so was prepared somewhat for the experience. I recommend it for any age and gender.
