Description

This was my first Ed Gorman read. I enjoy short story collections very much. Like most collections, this has some terrific stories and some real stinkers as well.

Lists with This Book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. This was my first Ed Gorman read. The collection started off incredibly strong but quickly began to fall off with a majority of the tales being mediocre or below average. The mixture of mystery, crime/noir, science fiction, and horror amongst the tales was a nice change of pace.

One of the most original thriller writers around. Different kinds of dead and other tales.

Here you'll find the extraordinary range of storytelling skill and powerful emotions that won Gorman the prized International Fiction Award. This collection reveals the extraordinary range of storytelling skill and powerful emotions that won Gorman the prized International Fiction Award. His protagonists, gritty and gruff, are strangely likable, and his writing, according to Mystery News, is powerful, disturbing, often poetic.

Ed Gorman is the most underrated writer of the last 20 years. All Gorman's collections are uniformly excellent but I think that Moonchasers and Other Stories is the most eccletic and representative of his short works. Although admired by writers like Dean Koontz, Gorman's work is leagues apart from the formula and routine of ultra commercial stuff of King's clones. He is an extraordinarily prolific romancist but his best work can be found in the short story form. Although Gorman is an american original his influences can be traced. The title novella is a little masterpiece of nostalgia, not unlike Bradbury's short works of 40& and 50& and King's novella The Body.

Receiving the International Fiction award, Different Kinds of Dead displays Ed Gorman’s talents as a masterful storyteller. This collection offers the murder-themed dark tales "Different Kinds of Dead," where a lonely computer salesman learns life lessons from a dead woman sitting shotgun in his car, "Deathman," a killer who enjoys juicy steaks prior to murdering his victims, and "A Girl Like You" about a misunderstood teenage boy who endures a fleeting and painful romance with a ghost. Gorman touches on futuristic fiction, as "Loverboy" offers a peak into a marriage strained by a husband’s addiction to cyber-sex parlors and holographic women. His protagonists, gritty and gruff, are strangely likeable, and his writing, according to Mystery News, is powerful, disturbing, [and] often poetic."

This recording features the dramatic voices of Rex Linn, Gabrielle de Cuir, Moira Quirk, Stefan Rudnicki and Stephen Hoye. Prepare for an emotional and psychological thrill-ride for which only the talents of writer Ed Gorman can be responsible.
