It depicted Admiral Vernon's seventy-gun flagship Burford with all flags flying, her broadside battering a Spanish fortress, "The Iron Castle" at Porto Bello, at almost point-blank range. It was how the public, the romantics, liked to imagine a sea-fight, he thought. No blood, no terror of a surgeon's blade, just the majesty of battle.

Alexander Kent, Michael Jayston. My first exposure to an Alexander Kent book and it was a fairly enjoyable experience. With all Dispatch Alexander Kent 19th century British naval story. The story is short and there are many scenes of seafaring action which the author writes with aplomb. We watch as ships of war tear each other apart and villains are dispatched gruesomely. All through this, the stern and darkly brooding Bolitho and his faithful companion Allday manage to overcome all manner of adversity. If you like C S Forresters Hornblower series you like this.

Alexander Kent (Author), Michael Jayston (Reader). Book 4 of 30 in the Bolitho Novels Series.

As with his previous performances of Kent's works, Michael Jayston is a delight to the ear. His crisp voice easily moves from narrative to conversation and from character to character without missing a beat. c) AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine

I find the series to be as enjoyable as the Hornblower series. I think it is better than the Hornblower books (I read one that was recommended to me, and immediately found an error in one of the battle maneuvers). You will want to get a copy of "A Sea of Words" which is essentially an illustrated dictionary of all the nautical terms and other details about that period in history.

THE SPARK OF COURAGE THE brig Loyal Chieftain, drifting and rolling under close-reefed topsails, was a death-trap for any landsman or the unwary. In pitch-darkness she lay between two sturdy luggers. while men from all three crews hauled on tackles, levered, and stowed an endless collection of cargo. In the brig’s forward hold, Allday marvelled at the speed of the transfer from the two luggers in spite of several stupid blunders

This is a late addition to the Bolitho canon. It goes back and fills in a gap in the narrative of Richard Bolitho's climb from lowly midshipman to admiral. It gives a view of England in the early 1790s that emphasizes the corruption that smuggling causes in English society--much as the drug trade does in contemporary American society. Bolitho is a man who is driven to right wrongs, regardless of the physical, emotional, or career costs. Alexander Kent is very good at describing naval warfare int he days of "wooden ships and iron men." It is an engrossing story of loyalty and treachery that keeps me turning page after page.

Story good but just too many typographical errors. A global edit to remove unnecessary hyphenations would be most welcome. If I could I would ask for my money back because I expect this rather large and repetitive error to be something that just doesn't occur in professional publishing. It seriously detracts from enjoying the reading experience.

I've read all 21 volumes of this series. This whole series is excellent, well written, nautically and and historically excellent. I think it is better than the Hornblower books (I read one that was recommended to me, and immediately found an error in one of the battle maneuvers). You will want to get a copy of "A Sea of Words" which is essentially an illustrated dictionary of all the nautical terms and other details about that period in history. The Bolitho books don't stop to explain what a "fid" is or that a "spotted dick" is a particular dish with raisins in it.

This is the 8th book in a series of 26. I have read the first dozen including this volume and I find them entertaining. They do not contain as much history as other similar series such as Hornblower or the Aubrey Master and Commander series. Lots of sea battles and conflicts with authority.

The book is easy to read. Simular to Hormblower series. Fit in as to time and is a good showing of what England did when the time of the war,

Great series of book. Simply written.......would appeal to high school or Middle school boys...as wall as adults....these ships were very similar to a school, with good guys, bad guys, hero's and bullies, cliques, friends and jerks. A great easy read that has a good plot and good characters that keep it interesting. Very technical about sailing and life aboard these ships in the late 1700's.

The Richard Bolitho series of book are a fun read. The history on the high seas back in the 17-1800s is an eye-opener. Alexander Kent merges historical events with human drama and enough action to keep you going and going! Only 4 stars because of the tediousness required to fill the reader in on people and past occurrences from earlier in Bolitho's life. This is required of any book series to make a single volume readable I understand and scan much of this an read on! I will be starting on the 17th Bolitho novel as soon as it hits the mail box!
Another 5 star episode in the Bolitho series. Best series since Horatio Hornblower.
