Not since her bestselling book The Friendship Cake has Hinton created characters who are so filled with heartache and fragile hope, that they will become a permanent part of the reader's life.

Though this is the saddest story I believe I've ever read, it was a story beautifully told. I was drawn into the sadness of the children and the environment of the time, a troubling setting. Ms. Hinton's symbolism with the trees was woven subtly yet beautifully through the story, being both the tool of death and the arms of God. The friendships were touching and the characters were real, both the good and the bad. The survival instinct through tragedy and the pain of loss and abandonment were immense. Ms. Hinton shared a tragic story in moving language, in such a way that we could feel the pain. With the heartbreak, there are gifts; there are secrets revealed. The book description says the characters will stay with you; they do. Beautifully written!
I had hopes for this book, because it really sounded interesting. Unfortunately, the author gets a little high-flown in her writing, and doesn't seem to get to the point.

Although this book has a good story, about a woman who was abandoned years ago in a daycare, I found it hard going. Alice, the woman who was abandoned as a child, by her mother, Olivia, has spent all of her childhood in foster care. Her mother shows up when Alice is a grown woman, and Alice knows nothing about her. Then Olivia dies and Alice sorts through her things to find out about her mother's life.

She finds out about Olivia's mother Mattie, who had two out of wedlock children. Olivia had a violent brother ,Roy. The family lived near a Black community with great neighbors, and Olivia is best friends, almost sisters, with Tree, her neighbor of the same age.

The book tells about Olivia's childhood, with her prostitute mother, the violence and racial prejudice of the time, and the saving grace and love from her next-door neighbors.

Just not easy reading because of the author's use of words.

This book starts out one way and then goes in a totally different direction. We are transported back in time to the sometimes bitter, angry South and into the lives of sometimes hopeless characters. In every life their lies a tale of another life that is connected by a single strand. Yet this is a story about hope and breaking the cycle of abandonment and abuse. You'll think of the characters and story long after you put it down. This is my first book by this author, and now I'm excited to check out her other works.

While well written, this is one of the most depressing books I have ever read. It feels as if the author tries to outdo herself with telling one evil and defiling event after another. Perhaps it was the title which misled me. Or a review what refers to "the many faces and languages of grace" and "a feast of holiness."
I am glad others enjoyed it. But for me, while I have no doubt that the events described have happened to people, and still do, to have them happen over and over in 240 pages is not at all balanced by a 6 page epilogue of understanding and release.

and a wonderful story as well. When Alice excavates the remainders of her dead mother's belongings, she discovers why she was abandoned at 4 years old and the terrible life her mother tried to leave behind. The writing is beautiful, the word choices are fantastic and the prose is artful and so full that you actually miss the characters after you read the final page. A must read!

Narayan of Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE ARMS OF GOD as a sublimely beautiful & sedately stunning read about the quality of motherhood.

When Alice, abandoned as a child & now raising her own daughter, is confronted by the mother who left her, her life changes forever.

THE ARMS OF GOD is a lovely, deep look into the spirit of family values & motherhood. Any woman reading this book will empathize, & even men might too!

This IS Lynne Hinton's best novel yet. It almost doesn't read like she wrote it only because it is so different than her other books. THE ARMS OF GOD is a lookback into time and threads the mother-daughter relationship into the present. The characters were heartfelt ~ it was a story most touching.
Amazing. With achingly beautiful turns of phrase, this novel explores friendship, tragedy, loss, fear & motherhood. Be kind to your mother, for she has a story. Unforgettable.
