Description

Shadow on the Trail (Thorndike Large Print Western Series). The plots on most westerns by these writers on others that I read normally have a love theme of some kind, with different twists in what is happening to the main characters.

Shadow on the Trail (Thorndike Large Print Western Series). I read mainly for enjoyment, some humor and Escape from the normal routine.

Series: Thorndike Press Large Print Western Series. Hardcover: 346 pages. Publisher: Thorndike Pr (June 1, 1992). Richard Matheson takes a compelling approach to the traditional western tale of a tough-as-nails gunslinger and conveys it from the inside out. Journal of the Gun Years takes the form of an annotated journal written by Clay Hauser, a directionless soldier fresh out of the Civil War who's forced to flee his bucolic hometown after an argument over cards ends in a fatal shooting (his first journal was one he scavenged off a Confederate soldier's corpse).

I did like reading this book, but I would not consider this being a western. The whole book was based on being holed up in a cabin during a snow blizzard. Did not really care for the ending of the book.

Series: Thorndike Press Large Print Western. Hardcover: 362 pages. Another great Ralph Cotton novel. A former love interest of the Ranger, years later has become Queen of the Outlaws. ISBN-10: 9781410464835. How does Maria take it when Sam goes after the Queen of the Outlaws? Not spoiling the story, you'll have to read it.

I am a Zane Grey aficianado. I read every thing of his I can get my hands on. That's been happening ever since I was a kid even though I knew boys and girls never talked to each other in quite that way. This book is one of his earlier efforts, and it might be a four star if you take that into account. A familiar reader can see him developing his craft and working on what would become familiar themes. There is a lot of fist fighting, not much gun play. Boy and girl romance works out a little easier than in later books. Good guys win out with both women and ranching.. The only shootout occurs off page, and there are no famous good guy gunmen in sight. Grey does not quite have his later patterns in place,
but it is a good beginning.

I have read a lot of Zane Grey books and I really like the style he uses here. The theme has become rather overused on TV and movies: Ranch owner dies and leaves the ranch to a next of kin who lives in the east and must come out to take his ranch over from a crooked cattle manager. Earnest Selby comes out, decides not to tell who he is, and gets a job on the ranch using only his first and middle name. Meets the ranch manager's daughter on the stage in and saves her from being held up on the stage which paves the way for his job. However, he figures the cattle are being undersold and the ranch manager is padding his pockets, hence, he must stay undercover until he can get proof of the thefts, all while falling in love with the daughter. Still a great read.

A pleasant read, if a bit drawn out. Ernest is pleasing if not naive, and one questions the sincerity of Anne throughout.
Phobism Phobism
Grey got a little bogged down in the romance department but he made up for in the action department. He seems to love those wanna be westerners characters. But it all works out in the end.
Ese Ese
Good concept but slow to develop especially the love interested. Had no doubt that the ranchers daughter was a good person.
The storyline was different and well thought out.
Dont_Wory Dont_Wory
A good western to read in a couple days.

Pretty good story
I like Zane Grey so not much I can say. They are interesting if you like westerns such as his or Louis Lamaur, even Linda Lael Miller. The plots on most westerns by these writers on others that I read normally have a love theme of some kind, with different twists in what is happening to the main characters. I read mainly for enjoyment, some humor and Escape from the normal routine.
