Part of The Vampire Chronicles series by Anne Rice. And as for The Vampire Lestat, when he came forth with his mighty rock music I thought it hysterically funny. More were slain; and out of hiding there came blood drinkers as old as the Queen herself, and Thorne saw these beings. At last there came the red-haired one who had made him. He saw her as others saw her.

Blood and Gold (2001) is the eighth book in Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles series. The book begins with an ancient vampire of Nordic descent awaking after being frozen in a block of ice for hundreds of years. The vampire, Thorne, meets Marius de Romanus and inquires about Marius' past. Marius then provides his life story.

The Vampire Chronicles is a series of novels and a media franchise created by American writer Anne Rice that revolves around the fictional character Lestat de Lioncourt, a French nobleman turned into a vampire in the 18th century. Rice said in a 2008 interview that her vampires were a "metaphor for lost souls". The homoerotic overtones of The Vampire Chronicles are also well-documented. As of November 2008, The Vampire Chronicles had sold 80 million copies worldwide.

“RICE WRITES WITH HER USUAL EROTIC AND HISTORICALLY EVOCATIVE FLAIR.”–PeopleOnce a proud Senator in Imperial Rome, Marius is kidnapped and forced into that dark realm of blood, where he is made a protector of the Queen and King of the vampires–in whom the core of the supernatural race resides. Through his eyes we see the fall of pagan Rome to the Emperor Constantine, the horrific sack of the Eternal City at the hands of the Visigoths, and the vile aftermath of the Black Death. Ultimately restored by the beauty of the Renaissance, Marius becomes a painter, living dangerously yet happily among mortals, and giving his heart to the great master Botticelli, to the bewitching courtesan Bianca, and to the mysterious young apprentice Armand. But it is in the present day, deep in the jungle, when Marius will meet his fate seeking justice from the oldest vampires in the world. . . .

The vampire Marius is by far my favorite version of a vampire. I lose myself sometimes imaging his palaces and where those who must be kept are housed. And I imagine great things. By far my favorite vampire chronicle (Memnoch the Devil is a close second)

Fantastical story, covering times of The Roman Empire, to the Renaissance, and beyong, through possibly the wisest eyes of immortality, Marius. History, beautiful literature, and vampires! Something for everyone.

This makes book 17 for my year and I've fallen in love with her all over again. If love to find out what happened to bianca and I'll be honest I've kind of lost respect for Marius. He's always seemed so level headed and I wouldn't think of him holding on to a grudge for so long but I'm interested to see where she goes next. Off to buy the next book.

Absolutely one of my favorite books in the chronicles. I have read and reread this book through the years. Marius echoes in some ways how I feel I would be if I was immortal. He is the watcher of history, the student of humanity, and shows his suffering as he deals with trying to make sense of immortal relationships. Thoroughly enjoyable!

I really love Ann Rice's writings and this is a very good story. Well written and laid out in a time line to tell the tail of one more Vampire that has touched base with all the other Vampires in her Vampire stories. Problem is it's been told and told again and again. I knew the story before I read it. If you have not read all of her other works, you would most likely give this story four stars. Her worst book was Blackwood farms and her last book The Wolf's of Midwinter just kicked my feet out from under me.

I would argue that Anne Rice is one of the finest story tellers of modern times. The exquisite detail of her stories is such that, looking up from the current book of hers that I am reading, I see a shadow of everything she has just described. I have read only about half of her books so far, but I will not be able to stop until I have read everything she has written.
Allow yourself to become taken in to her beautiful and fantastical world and you will walk away with a beauty unparalleled.

Not since The Vampire Lestat has Rice lived up to her potential in The Vampire Chronicals. This is clearly the best of them since then. Several new characters of real note are introduced. Chief among them is Thorne, who is as much a warrior as Marius is a magician. Deceptively simple and direct he turns out to be more complicated and certainly more powerful than one might expect. The chapter on the encounter between Marius and the beautiful and sinister Eudoxia is the best chapter in the chronicals since the rock musicial phase of Lestat. If you love The Vampire Chronicals, but have been disillusioned with them of late, this one will restore your enthusiasm.
I've read 1-7 with great interest. This book is boring...it explains what we already ready from other vampires perspectives. He gives more details about his personal life and thoughts. The others took me about a month each, reading only in the evenings before bed. I'm in my 5th month and find that I go weeks before picking it up. Still determined to finish it.
