I love Mercedes I love Mercedes
Disappointing. Doesn't feel like it's a real Tom Clancy at all; it feels more like he allowed the use of his name to a ghostwriter and possibly some help with the tactical/political end of the writing. The only character who amounts to anything is Captain Bartholomew Mackey, and he is a cardboard cutout with no depth at all. The secondary characters are not even given names, just job titles! For all practical purposes, they are ghosts. It is so NOT how Tom Clancy writes. This is one of the reasons I feel Clancy was little to non-involved in the production of this novel.

The repetition of phrases used in the writing, particularly as regards the behavior of the torpedoes, becomes like nails on a chalkboard after awhile. While I am aware the Navy follows set procedures for torpedo firing, I've also read enough books by the World War II submarine captains like George Grider, Gene Fluckey, and Dick O'Kane to know that a crew that has been together for awhile becomes more casual about this and has their own phrasing that is used. It would have been nice to see some of this; it would have made the novel much less like a manual and more like the real world.

Essentially, this novel is a big wet kiss to the Los Angeles class attack submarines and the Mark 48 ADCAP torpedo. I will not go so far as to say it reads like fanfic, but it has no depth and little width. Even with Tom Clancy's name on it, I cannot recommend this book to readers of military fiction.

This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn the nomenclature and nuances of submarine warfare. From a novel point of view, however, it follows the "game" for which it was written and will be disappointing for anyone looking for Clancy's usual narrative.

A little know but very gripping and enjoyable tale of 1 US submarine against the Chinese military. This is NOT a new book but it is about the Spratley Islands that China is currently taking over in the South China Sea.

Unlike any other Clancy book I've ever red. It is like a narrative of one single submarine. Never the less, it is a decent book.
Good book on sub warfare. but the idea that one sub would conduct a war with China for so long without more subs joining is out there.

I love Clancy's writing, and so while going on a long road trip a while back, I bought the audio version. Excellent entertainment on the trip and fun to listen to. I plan to get the CD and download it to the iPod to carry around for the same purpose. But for reading, I can probably see why many on this site rate it as they do. I read for depth. And deep this ain't. As far as reading goes, if you want a great Clancy novel which takes you through sub warfare, I strongly recommend Hunt for Red October and Red Storm Rising. If you want to have a fun yarn while on a road trip, the audio verion is worth it.

I served aboard the USS HENRY L STIMSON SSBN 655 (G). This book hits the nail on the head describing life aboard a sub.
I read Tom Clancy's book, "SSN" several years ago, and enjoyed it very much. Little did I know I'd be re-reading it and sharing it with my daughter. My grandson (her son) is in the midst of training at the Navy's submarine school on the East Coast. I think the combination of fact and fiction makes it one of Mr. Clancy's more memorable books - full of excitement. His writing allows me to see everything with the mind's eye and, with his writing, experience all the activities aboard the mighty USS Cheyenne during action in the Pacific.
