Hibbert also wrote four non-fiction books under the pseudonym Jean Plaidy. Gerald G Swan published the first Jean Plaidy book in 1945 but every one after that was published by Robert Hale  . Murder Most Royal (1949) (. The King's Pleasure).

It appeared that the King had cast off his infirmities; he was as a young man again. Perhaps, thought the Cardinal, watching him, he congratulates himself that, although his body may be failing him,. his mind is as shrewd and cunning. his mind is as shrewd and cunning as it ever was – and indeed, it may be more so, for his experience teaches him further methods of double-dealing, of plotting against his friends while he professes his regard for them. Ximenes could have felt sorry for the young King of England if he had not been convinced that what had happened to him was due to his own folly.

I love Jean Plaidy's books - and as with this book's predecessors, The Shadow of the Pomegranate is very well written. I learn a lot from her novels and would recommend them to anyone - historical fiction fan or not. Now to the next in the Tudors series. From what I’d heard of Plaidy previously, her prolific output made her the staunch backbone of the historical novel genre. But she seems to be mainly well known for sheer output than quality. I’ve rarely heard anyone talk about her actual writing.

Honestly, living with Henry VIII sounds like a nightmare and I am thankful I live in a time when women don't have to rely on a man to better herself or her circumstances.

I have read many of the novels by Jean Plaidy. Of all the ones that I have read, this is by far my favorite. Probably part of the reason it is so good is that there is so much basic plot and material there to work with. She does do a great job of capturing the personality of Katherine of Aragon and the basic history of the period. You learn a lot about the history of the time in a very entertaining way. I think this is a fantastic historical or romantic novel for most adults.
