I read the Colorado River by Gary McCarthy, first, and totally loved that book. McCarthy again shows his writing skills here in this very well written book on the American River and the development of the Sacramento area of California. It was interesting, exciting, and made me want to explore the Colorado river for my self. The characters are well developed and it is like you are there with. The interplay between characters is well don.

McCarthy has a great way with the West, but in this book he shows his depth as a writer. This story has all the right elements: action, romance, mystery, adventure, etc. The most compelling part is the relationship between the sisters (which is continued even more successfully in the sequel) and how they grow together, even as they disagree about life's choices.
I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!
