Seven Miles to Sundown book.

Seven Miles to Sundown book.

by Richard S. Wheeler. Rio Blanco is a dying town, until a snake bit prospector collapses in the street, clutching a chunk of gold and gasping last words about the Lost Doubloon mine.

Richard Wheeler writes novels set in early mining towns, including Cashbox and Sun Mountain. He is the author of over seventy novels, including mysteries, westerns, and historical novels, and is the recipient of six Spur Awards from Western Writers of America. In that book I was impressed with the fluid prose and interesting plot line.

In Goldfield, Wheeler develops an even better plot line, and goes deeper into developing the characters, an effort well spent.

Richard S. Wheeler (1935-2019) wrote over fifty novels and several short stories. Wheeler lived in the literary and film community of Livingston, Montana.

There is a season for all things. For Skye's younger wife, the beautiful Shoshone woman he calls Mary, it is time to find the beloved son she has not seen in seven years. For Skye's half-blood son, North Star, it is time to discover who he is. And for Skye's older Crow wife, Victoria, the whole world is spinning out of control. He's slow and his eyesight is not good, but he presides over a peaceful county.

Having only gotten interested in western fiction in the last couple of years, it would be a far stretch to say I am well versed in every author who is putting out good stuff. That being said, I am amazed that I am the first person to review this book! Wheeler is clearly a talented writer who does an excellent job in blending great plot lines with historical accuracy. Someone bought me this book from a book sale, it got set aside, and then one day recently I picked it up. I loved it. This is a great book. The plot is both believable and interesting. Part of what makes this a good book is the good character development. The characters are not typical cookie cutter western characters, but real people who found themselves in the west for different reasons. The book reads easily and quiokly. I went to the library and was disapointed to learn my small town local library only carried one of Wheelers books, one from the Barnaby Sky series (Downriver). I read that up right away to. It has a different feel than this book, but was also quite good, which makes me confident Seven Miles to Sundown wasnt a one-hit wonder. I just ordered five of his books from Amazon and am anxiously awaiting their arrival. Kudos to Wheeler for putting out some great stories, I feel confident those who appreciate good fiction and/or good westerns will really appreciate his works.

This is more like the Westerns by Richard Wheeler that I enjoyed before running into his "historical" writings.
I held back a star because there is more detail (some call it historical) than I need in a Western. I did skip some of the stuff which added nothing to the plot, but not much.
The ending, which I won't belabor, was pretty much unreal concerning the gold mine, but starting the trip to Mexico City made up for it!
In typical Western fashion I love, the bad guys lost, the guy guys (OK, and girl) won!
