The Norton Anthology of English Literature is an anthology of English literature published by the W. W. Norton & Company.

From the inception of The Norton Anthology of American Literature, three goals have been paramount: first, to present a variety of works rich and substantial enough to enable teachers to build their own courses according to their own ideals; second, to make the anthology self-sufficient by featuring many works in their entirety and longer selections so that individual authors can be covered. in depth; and third, to balance traditional interests with developing critical concerns

Another reviewer was not exaggerating in stating that the size of this book is insane. The only thing is that they recommend buying the divided edition, but they don't say which one that is! I would have gotten the smaller two volume set if I had known what the ISBN was! The thought of having to haul this book to every class is terrifying to say the least. I'd have paid the extra money just to have this thing halved when I need to tote it.

The paper is super thin, not bible thin but close, and while the print isn't uber tiny, it is hitting the threshold for people w/ vision problems.

To help out all you people who would like the ISBN for the 2 vol. set, here it is from the back of the enormous book: 9780393930580

I'm going to post a picture so that you guys can get an accurate idea of the scale of this thing.

Edit: Posted several pics and note the dent it puts into my mattress! I think the price is based on the weight.

**** Note that this does not mean that the content is lacking. In fact the content of this volume is amazing and worth the price to have the literature all together. You can however get at least 50% or more of the content from free sources online like
Great price!
I was so not expecting this book to be this thick; the only thing about it was that the letters were a bit small, but its understandable considering that the there were so many pages with so many stories. The binding in the book was a bit weak and the pages were thin exactly like a bible and therefore many times I accidently ripped some of the pages. For the most part it being a used book, great work.

Thank you.

I liked this book because it had well-written biographies of the authors and a good selection of works by them. What I didn't like was the thinness of the paper and the actual weight of the book. I agree with other commenters that the volume is too heavy, even though it says shorter seventh edition. Carrying this book in the heat to my summer school class was not fun. Since I wasn't going to use this for more than a couple of weeks, I didn't bother getting a new copy. To be fair, it is smaller than some of the major anthologies that Norton publishes.

Literature that provided a great history lesson on the discovery of America, the various Indian nations, the beauty of the American landscape, the atrocities of the settlers and Europe. Things I did not remember learning in high school.

Bought this as a textbook for college courses and it's pretty good. Typical Norton Anthology really.

This book is huge, and new, costs as much as it weighs. So thankful for a cheaper option, even if it is used. Book was as described, and exactly what I needed.
The type is very small, so that's difficult. It really should be on Kindle, they do have an online study guide, but the entire book should be put into Kindle or ebook format. The content of the book is excellent, but it's so heavy. If it must be in physical book form, it would be much better to divide it into four volumes and enlarge the type.
