Mapp and Lucia has been added to your Cart. Book 4 of 6 in the Make Way For Lucia Series.
Mapp and Lucia is a collective name for a series of novels by E. Benson, and also the name for two British television adaptations based on those novels. The novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of (mainly) upper-middle-class British characters in the 1920s and 1930s, many of whom do not work for a living, who vie for social prestige and one-upmanship in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery.

Benson was a wonderful, witty observer of social behavior, and his Mapp and Lucia novels are hilarious. Combine his writing with Prunella Scales' acting ability and you have something which is absolutely brilliant.

I liked Elizabeth Mapp, choleric and impossible,in her own book.
Two queens of trivia and respectable (yet shamelessly inquisitive). I liked Elizabeth Mapp, choleric and impossible,in her own book. But when E F Benson brought his two battle-axes together, he created an enduring delight which for me will never fade. He might be a bit of a marmite writer but when you do love him, you're a fan forever. He only wrote 6 books, but when my original anthology fell apart from re-reading I bought the whole set on Kindle.
Mapp and Lucia Novels. Even then reading was difficult, for the book-stand on the table contained nothing but a few crabbed black-letter volumes dating from not later than the early seventeenth century, and you had to be in a frantically Elizabethan frame of mind to be at ease there. But Mrs Lucas often spent some of her rare leisure moments in the smoking-parlour, playing on the virginal that stood in the window, or kippering herself in the fumes of the wood-fire as with streaming eyes she deciphered an Elzevir Horace rather late for inclusion under the rule, but an undoubted bargain.
