Jane Thistle and Phoebe Twigg are as different as two best friends can b. Thistle & Twigg Mysteries - Mary Saums.

Jane Thistle and Phoebe Twigg are as different as two best friends can be. Phoebe has never seen any reason to leave her small Southern hometown, while Jane, the urbane widow of a career military officer, has traveled all over, only recently putting down roots in Tullulah, Alabama. At times, Tullulah can be a sleepy little town, but no one sleeps through the thunderstorm that knocks down a tree on Jane's property and uncovers a pile of skeletal remains buried underneath. Jane has some archaeological experience, thanks to all her travels, and knows a few experts.

Jane Thistle is a widow who has just settled down in Tullulah, Alabama . Her new best friend is Phoebe Twigg, also a widow, who has lived in Tullulah all her life.

Jane Thistle is a widow who has just settled down in Tullulah, Alabama, after a long and happy life with her husband, a career military officer whose job took them all over the world. But now that she's on her own, she's just as happy to have found this delightful small Southern town to call home. Jane and Phoebe quickly become partners in investigation in Mary Saums's funny and charming--and surprising--debut mystery.

He’d been busy gathering books and other materials into boxes that he insisted I take. The number of boxes he had stacked and waiting for me was more than I expected, seventeen of them numbered with. I hurried so I could load them all myself. Cal was so stubborn about taking it easy and I worried he’d overexert himself. Once home, I stacked them next to my own boxes that I had yet to unpack in the den. I’d promised Phoebe I’d go into town with her that morning.

The motto for this book, and the series to come, might be "Never underestimate the power of a woman - especially two women. The much-traveled Thistle and the small-town, trusting Twigg each have hidden strengths that become apparent as they battle murderers and despoilers of the environment. It is not surprising that she is also a published poet. The real point of the book, as is the case in most cozy mysteries is more about the characters and the world they inhabit than in the actual mystery itself.

This was a lovely book to read. The format was slightly different in that it alternates narrative between two new friends and how they encounter and solve mysteries including murders.

A new widow, Ms. Jane Thistle moves to a town in Alabama that she discovered while moving with her husband from military base to base during their long life together. Jane has the ability to see and speak with ghosts. This ability is shown to us, the readers, in a peaceful and joyful manner. This is not a scary ghost story. This is a story of history, spiritual awareness, and friendships that can last from now to eternity.

A lonely widow, Ms. Phoebe Twigg meets her new best friend while Jane is buying bullets. Rather than being put off, this sheltered Lady decides it is time to buy herself some bullets. A strong friendship is being born. Mind you Phoebe doesn't own a gun but that is besides the point.

This book has love, humor, and adventure. I reacted very strongly to some of the action as I believe the author wished me to do. She would not be unhappy, I think.

I have purchases her next book and will look forward to meeting my new friends, Jane and Phoebe again.

This is a splendid cozy written by a woman with clear talent. The story is well crafted, the dialogue is interesting, and the characters appealing. This is not a silly mystery. The premise is reasonable and this story had nice spiritual, metaphysical overtones that but did not overtake the story. Jane Thistle is a very grounded, complex, educated, intriguing protagonist. Her friend Phoebe Twigg has room to grow and presents a nice contrast. It was a bit hard to believe some of the physical feats of self-defense that Jane exhibited, but I bought into it. This series can fill a big hole missing in this genre and I hope to see more of Jane and Phoebe. Author Mary Saums covers a lot of bases here and she covers them very well. Something here for everyone. She has the interesting women with different personalities who form a bond of friendship and murder solving, the ornery old codger with the deep secrets, the local policemen, the bad guys, the friendly dog, international intrigue, beautiful mystical landscapes, physical altercations, references to solid marriages, sparks of romantic interests, interesting historical aspects, environmentalism, health and fitness, coming of age at an old age, modern plots related to current events and timeless problems. Just to name a few themes on which the author touches. Complex and interesting, like life. Keep up the good work.

Thistle and Twigg #1. I enjoyed this book very much. A great mystry, with two great characters, Mrs. Thistle and Mrs. Twig, both widows, and very different personsalities.
They are unlikely friends, but make a great detecting duo.
A very enjoyable book with a simple plot. A short ready, but a satisfying one.
I have also read #2, and I was diaappointed to see that there are no more books in this series.

This is a new series. I love it! I had my mystery book club review this and it got favorable reviews from all but one. My friend did not like that the 2 main characters were such opposites: one perfect, one imperfect. But to me they were so obviously different, quirky, unusual, that they were appealing to me. I cannot wait for the next book in this series. I found the characters very appealing and funny. I was immediately drawn into the story, interested in the characters, and how the newcomer would be accepted by her neighbors. This new series has promise.
